Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
Full PhD title : Definition and understanding of the antimony (Sb) mineral system(s) in the French Massif Central.
The hosting institution is BRGM, located in Orléans.
You will be based within the new Mineral Resources Division (DRM), in the Mineral Resources Geology and Exploration (GEM) unit.
This PhD project is part of subtask 2.1.4 “Sb mineral systems” of the targeted PC13 project: Massif Central, under the PEPR Sous-sol, bien commun programme, which now constitutes a major research initiative in metallogeny within the French research ecosystem.
Throughout your PhD, you will benefit from a wide range of expertise through partnerships with several research laboratories, including ISTO (University of Orléans), Géosciences Rennes (University of Rennes), and Chrono-environnement (University of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté).
Job description
This PhD project will combine:
1) Structural geology work in the field to define the structural controls on mineralisation,
2) Characterisation of the fertility of the various continental blocks of the French Massif Central, in order to determine whether the deposits are associated with specific tectono-metamorphic and/or magmatic environments, or with particular fault geometries,
3) Dating of mineralising events,
4) Reconstruction of the Variscan geodynamics at the time of ore deposition, to identify key stages in the circulation of metal-bearing fluids and metal trapping processes.
Ultimately, this project aims to define new proxies to improve the exploration and prediction of Sb mineral occurrences at the scale of the French Variscan belt — and potentially at the European scale as well.
This is a full-time position based in Orléans, France, and involves national and international travel. The frequency and duration of travel will depend on the specific tasks of the PhD (fieldwork, seminars, conferences, etc.).
You will be enrolled in the EMSTU doctoral school at the University of Orléans.
Within an environment that promotes a healthy work/life balance, particularly thanks to remote working, BRGM prides itself on providing a friendly and caring place to work.
Awarded HRS4R certification in 2021, we are committed to supporting you throughout your career at BRGM. We provide you with a range of tools for developing your skills and expertise, with scope for career progression and geographic mobility.
At BRGM, you will gain from such benefits as a 13th month salary, days off compensating for unpaid overtime, a company canteen, sports facilities as well as holiday and leisure options.
