Contract duration
12 months
Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
The French Geological Survey (BRGM) opens a position for a 12-month postdoctoral researcher in order to quantify the cascade of uncertainties in spatial interpolation of environmental data (with applications in natural hazards and soil pollution). The proposed postdoctoral position is part of the ANR HOUSES research project funded by the French Research Agency (https://anrhouses.github.io/). Within this project, the candidate will interact with colleagues with diverse expertise: uncertainty theories (IRIT, UTCHEUDIASYC), geostatistical methods (ARMINES) and environmental applications (BRGM, HESUS).
Objective: development of an approach for integrating imprecision (measurement errors and expert judgments) in kriging-based spatial interpolations for environmental applications More details ae available here : https://anrhouses.github.io/files/Houses_postdoc_en_v230125.pdf
Job description
The post-doctoral researcher is expected to perform the following tasks:
- In-depth analysis of the cascade of uncertainties in methods based on kriging for spatial interpolation.
- Development of an approach for integrating imprecision (measurement error et expert judgements).
– Implementation using scientific programming (python or R).
– Application to real cases (mapping of trace element concentrations in groundwater; mapping of sand sediment thickness for dune systems).

- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good scientific communication skills, including writing scientific reports and articles.
The postdoctoral researcher will join the multidisciplinary team of the ANR HOUSES research project (https://anrhouses.github.io/).
