Context and contributions of the position

The Seine-Normandie Water Agency has launched a call for projects aimed at accelerating the implementation of the government's "Water Plan" quantitative studies.

These studies aim to better understand water resources and their uses, establish a quantitative assessment considering climate change, and define the appropriate management rules using hydrogeological models.

In Normandy, the BRGM (Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières) has been selected to implement quantitative studies on two areas: the Cailly-Aubette-Robec catchments (OPTIMISE project) and the Iton catchment (MORITO project).

These two studies are geographically continuous and share common research objectives:
- Change in conceptual model for the chalk aquifer: taking into account the heterogeneities of the reservoir and the new lithostratigraphic divisions, and measuring their significance in understanding the functioning of aquifers (vulnerability, resource availability, etc.).
- Improvement of recharge spatialization in models (MARTHE code, Thiery, 2015): addressing the zoning of parameters controlling recharge (runoff/infiltration, unsaturated zone, usable reserves, etc.).
- Calibration of a model (PEST++ interfaced with MARTHE) to be tested in a multilayered aquifer context.
- Eventually, karst drain modeling in a MARTHE model, continuing the work from the doctoral theses of A. Dufoyer and A. Gouy.

Job description

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.

BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

Your key duties will be to:
• Building a hydrogeological model using the MARTHE calculation code;
• Exploiting a MARTHE hydrogeological model and improving its calibration using PEST++ optimization algorithms (parametric calibration) via the pymarthe coupling interface;
• Methodological development aimed at defining the maximum mobilizable volumes of groundwater and surface water while meeting environmental objectives;
• Methodological development to retrieve information related to the state of the hydrosystem from MARTHE, assess the impact dynamics of extractions on the hydrosystem's state, and transmit this data to the economic model for economic optimization;
• Dissemination through at least one scientific publication in an international journal and participation in conferences.
