Context and contributions of the position

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 25 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.

BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

Reporting to the Deputy Director of the Territorial Actions Directorate (DAT), responsible for the Northern and Western regions, the Regional Director is responsible for BRGM's activities in the Pays de la Loire region through the facilitation and coordination of BRGM's actions within the region.
The Regional Director represents BRGM to public authorities and oversees scientific and tech-nical activities, in line with BRGM's national strategy and taking into account the strategies of its regional partners.

BRGM is actively engaged in addressing major challenges in the Pays de la Loire region, including water resources management, soil and subsurface pollution, natural and coastal risks, and the energy transition.

Job description

You will be mainly responsible for:
- Leading and managing the team assigned to the regional office in Nantes (around ten staff members);
- Managing the Nantes site as head of the establishment;
- Ensuring continuous monitoring and understanding of regional needs regarding support to public policies, research activities, and collaborations with companies;
- Representing BRGM institutionally with the Prefect and related state services, as well as with local authorities and thematic agencies. In this capacity, you will develop the programme of activities supporting public policies and research in collaboration with these stakeholders and will lead the Regional Programming Committees for the Pays de la Loire region;
- Ensuring the consistency of actions implemented within the regional office with the organisation's strategy and with the priorities of the Territorial Actions Directorate (DAT), through its annual roadmap;
- Supporting project managers in the preparation of partnership agreements and contracts;
- Monitoring and optimising the implementation of projects carried out by the regional office;
- Maintaining relationships with research institutions and laboratories within the regional scope and, whenever possible, developing collaborative research projects with them;
- Supporting the basin coordinator in developing high scientific value research projects related to water resources within the Loire-Bretagne river basin;
- Ensuring the development of the team's skills (training plan, mentoring);
- Ensuring proper application of the organisation's quality management procedures, management procedures, and compliance with safety rules;
- Contributing to scientific and technical production;
- Ensuring coordination and interfaces with BRGM's central departments (thematic operational divisions, scientific directorate, etc.).

Profile

Requested start date: 2026-09-01
Education: PHD
Experience: 10-15 years

You hold an engineering degree, a PhD, or a university degree (Master's level or higher) in geosciences, with at least 10 years of professional experience and, preferably, initial expe-rience in team management.

You will demonstrate the following skills and qualities:
- Proven experience and capabilities in team leadership and management;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and negotiate with partners and clients from the public, institutional and industrial sectors;
- Expertise in at least one field of geosciences;
- Broad understanding of the main geoscience disciplines (particularly natural hazards and hydrogeology);
- Knowledge of the Pays de la Loire region would be an advantage;
- Strong negotiation and conflict management skills;
- Initiative, ability to make proposals and a strong sense of responsibility;
- Experience in developing and managing complex projects (with multiple funders and/or partners, European projects, etc.);
- Strong listening, facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to encourage the emergence of new projects;
- Good overall knowledge of the organisation's activities and internal procedures (particularly the quality management system – QMS);
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
