Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
The objectives of the Water Division are to provide a multi-disciplinary and systemic response to the challenges of accessibility and availability of groundwater resources and knowledge of their interactions with the other compartments of the major water cycle in the face of anthropogenic and climatic pressures, in order to support the adaptation and resilience of territories.
Job description
The main challenges of the DE/DRE unit (Water data and reference systems) lie in federating, increasing the reliability, enhancing the value and disseminating water data in order to improve knowledge of hydrogeological systems and their functioning, for optimized management of water resources in France and internationally in a context of global change, and in disseminating this knowledge to managers, decision-makers and civil society.
In line with BRGM's digital strategy, these challenges aim to structure the BRGM's Water Information System (SIEAU) through various structuring projects.
You will be mainly responsible for:
- Develop multi-criteria approaches and tools combining geological knowledge and groundwater and surface water, in information production processes (including mapping) oriented towards decision support for sustainable water resource management in France and internationally;
- Develop and evolve knowledge and observation systems (databases, conceptual models, database architecture, capitalization and valorization of groundwater knowledge) in compliance with international standards OGC, OM&S, SensorThings;
- Get involved in transdisciplinary projects on water data acquisition and management, such as Water4All, OneWater, and BRGM's Integrative Numlerci Platform;
- Being at the interface between the user and the developers to facilitate the expression of user needs and the drafting of functional specifications;
- Set up and lead projects related to the acquisition, management and valorization of water data.

You will demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
- Solid multidisciplinary technical knowledge in the field of hydrogeology;
- Experimented in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS), RDBMS (PostgreSQL-PostGIS) and programing languages (such as Python);
- Skills in the research, development and use of methods for studying the functioning of hydro-systems
- Mastery of procedures for acquiring, managing, capitalizing/storing and promoting data and knowledge, with a view to meeting "FAIR" principles;
- Rigor, analytical and synthesizing skills, sense of responsibility;
- Ability to take initiative, curiosity, aptitude for innovation.
Working conditions
You hold a PhD and ideally have initial post-doctoral experience. Full-time position.
