Context and contributions of the position

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 25 bases in Mainland and Overseas France. BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

The Water Directorate (DE) is tasked with addressing societal needs related to water resource management and the environmental impacts of human activities on these resources in the context of climate change. You will join the Aquifer Numerical Modeling Unit (MNA) to contribute to modeling activities and to the development and/or validation of the performance of various hydrology and hydrogeology calculation codes, bringing innovative approaches to support research efforts and increase knowledge about aquifer systems and associated water environments (rivers, wetlands, etc.) aimed at optimizing their quantitative and qualitative management at different scales (local, regional, national) and supporting the adaptation of hydrosystems to transitions linked to global changes.

Job description

You will be required to carry out the following tasks:

- Contribute to research projects and support public policies on the quantitative and qualitative management and protection of groundwater resources, particularly in connection with surface waters and global changes;

- Model underground flows in connection with surface waters (aquifer-river exchange and urban network) and model the transport of associated solutes/heat/mass (saline intrusion/point and diffuse pollution/impacts of climate change...;

- Contribute to the integration of innovative approaches in hydrogeological modeling using artificial intelligence and/or data assimilation methods and multi-objective management optimization under uncertainty;

- Contribute to and coordinate the development of public or private research projects, support for public policies, and international cooperation;

- Be proactive in proposing ideas for national and European research project calls;

- Highlight the results in the form of technical reports, publications;

- Present scientific results and be able to simplify them for all types of stakeholders, as well as engage in dialogue with multidisciplinary teams

Profile

You will mobilize the following skills and qualities :

- Solid knowledge in hydrogeology;

- Expertise in hydrogeological modeling (flows and transfer/transport);

- Experience in data assimilation and/or uncertainty analysis and optimization under uncertainty;

- Experience in modeling adaptation solutions in the context of climate change (managed aquifer recharge, impact studies on the quantity and quality of water resources,);

- Knowledge and practice of AI concepts appreciated (machine learning, deep learning, PINNS) leading to the development of digital twins of hydrosystems;

- Interpersonal skills, a taste for teamwork, strong motivation, organization, and rigor in: carrying out tasks, delivering work, and complying with contractual clauses;

- Initiative and creativity;

- Good communication skills, both oral and written, to present the scientific and technical results of projects (publications, articles, conference presentations) and to conduct training;

- Proficiency in English, written and spoken.

You hold a PhD with prior experience in postdoctoral research or in industry, preferably gained abroad. This full-time position involves travel mainly within France and occasionally abroad.
