Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
In the context of global change, the issue of water resources in mountain areas is becoming increasingly worrying.
This is particularly the case for aquifers whose recharge is linked to the cryosphere (snow and glaciers melting).
An attention should be paid to the altered functioning of groundwater resources that has an impact on high altitude water streams.
The hydrogeology community is beginning to address these issues, which are emerging among scientists (AIH world conference organised in Davos, EGU conference in Vienna including numerous sessions on mountain aquifers).
Stakeholders in mountain areas are also facing growing scientific questions about the sustainable management of groundwater resources and the ecosystems that depend on them.
Job description
Your key duties will be to:
- Carry out scientific research or take part in R&D research projects, as well as expert missions in support of public policies at various levels (from regional to international), within multidisciplinary teams, with academic, institutional and industrial partners, concerning the hydrogeology of aquifers (crystalline, karstic and others) in mountainous contexts in relation to the impact of climate change.
- Helping to set up projects in collaboration with project leaders and/or the unit manager, in response to client needs and/or calls for tenders (ANR, European Commission, PRIMA, etc.).
- Publish the results in the form of technical reports, scientific publications (peer-reviewed international journals) and presentations at conferences.

- hydrodynamic functioning of fractured and/or karst aquifers in a mountain context;
- impact of climate change on the recharge of mountain aquifers in relation to snow and glacier melt;
- impact of CC on groundwater-dependent ecosystems.
- Ability to integrate and/or mobilise various methods (geological, geophysical, geochemical, statistical, etc.) to establish conceptual models of the functioning of complex aquifers in a mountain environment.
- Excellent reading, speaking and writing skills in French and English.
- Ability to conceptualise complex problems. Interest in interdisciplinary teamwork.
- Experience of numerical modelling of aquifers would be a plus.
