Context and contributions of the position
Joining the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) means becoming part of the leading public establishment in the Earth sciences, bringing together 1,000 expert and enthusiastic people in 29 entities located in mainland France and overseas.
The aim of BRGM's work is to provide geological knowledge and an understanding of phenomena linked to the soil and subsoil, with one overriding objective: to meet the challenges of environmental change through innovative projects that have a major impact on society.
BRGM Geology, Geophysics and Geomodelling Department (DCGS) is responsible for acquiring, consolidating, and reproducing knowledge of the structures, geometries, properties, resources, and risks of the national subsurface in the form of geomodels.
It provides expertise in the acquisition, processing, interpretation, analysis, and representation of geological, geophysical, geochemical, and hydrogeological data.
It is the repository for all data, information, and knowledge of the national subsurface and ensures their interpretation and restitution within shared repositories in the form of 3D/4D geological models that serve as a basis for thematic studies: water, georesources, and energy transition, etc.
Job description
You will work within the Surficial Geology Team (GSA), which is responsible for the acquisition and development of surface geological data and associated processes.
In this context, you will respond more specifically to research and expertise issues on understanding and characterization of surface processes, multi-scale mapping and geology-geophysics or geology-geotechnics couplings.
As part of your responsibilities, you will primarily be in charge of:
-Acquiring, interpreting, and representing near-surface geological data in 2D and 3D, including in urban environments.
-Characterising surface geological formations and associated processes in order to anticipate constraints related to urban development, such as ground stability, geotechnical hazards, sediment mobility, and interactions between geology, water, and infrastructure.
-Designing new approaches for near-subsurface mapping and 3D/4D modelling, integrating field data, geophysics, imaging techniques, artificial intelligence, and related methods.
-Developing and leading large-scale projects (national and European) aimed at integrating surface geology into urban planning, territorial resilience, and strategies for the sustainable use of the subsurface.
-Leading and contributing to cross-disciplinary projects involving themes such as Urban Geology, Geothermal Energy, Natural Hazards, and Groundwater.
-Disseminating and promoting your work at both national and international levels.
Profile
Starting date: 01/05/2026
Formation: PhD
Experience: 5 – 10 years
You have a PhD in surface geology and have strong experience in geological characterisation and geometric modelling of surface deposits.
You will mobilise the following skills and competencies:
-Strong knowledge of geological and anthropogenic processes affecting surface deposits.
-Geometric modelling of surficial formations.
-Practical experience with modelling tools, GIS, and spatial analysis.
-Acquisition of geological data in the field.
-Experience in, or a strong interest for, the development and management of research projects.
-Knowledge of geophysical data integration and valorisation.
-Familiarity with geotechnical concepts, methods, and standards would be an asset.
-Ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams (geologists, geophysicists, hydrogeologists, reservoir engineers, etc.).
-Strong oral and written communication skills, including participation in presentations, workshops, and conferences.
-Active scientific monitoring and literature review.
-Excellent interpersonal skills.
-Proficiency in English.
Working conditions
This full-time position involves occasional travel in France and abroad.
