Job title

Geophysical Research Engineer

Contract

Permanent Project Contract

Contractual hours

Full-time

Contract duration

24 month

Context and contributions of the position

The Subsurface Knowledge and Geomodelling Department (DCGS) of BRGM is responsible for acquiring, consolidating, and delivering knowledge of the national subsurface in the form of geomodels.
It focuses on characterizing structures and geometries, properties, resources, and risks associated with the subsurface by mobilizing expertise in the acquisition, processing, interpretation, analysis, and representation of geological, geophysical, geochemical, and hydrogeological data.
DCGS also serves as the repository for all data, information, and knowledge related to the national subsurface, which it interprets and delivers through shared reference frameworks, particularly in the form of 3D/4D geological models. These models provide an essential foundation for thematic studies related to water, geo-resources, and the energy transition.
You will work within this department, in the geophysics division composed of approximately 45 passionate geophysicists, structured into two distinct units: Near-Surface Geophysics and Remote Sensing (GTS) and Deep Geophysics and Remote Sensing (GTP).
The position is attached to the GTS unit. This unit aims to deploy and develop innovative geophysical and satellite-based methods for imaging geological objects at all scales, monitoring subsurface energy and mineral resources, and analyzing natural and anthropogenic risks.
These activities range from expert assessments and support for public policies to high value-added services.

Job description

In this context, and to support and strengthen its activities in gravimetry, BRGM is recruiting a geophysicist research engineer (M/F) with a specialization in gravimetry
Within the Near-Surface Geophysics and Remote Sensing unit (DCGS/GTS), you will contribute to activities ranging from high value-added specialized services to research in applied and experimental geophysics.
The role will mainly involve continuing and strengthening ongoing initiatives, including:
Contributions to APP projects in urban microgravimetry,
Participation in the MRE (Mineral Resources Inventory) project, where gravimetry plays a central role, as well as in European projects involving the DCGS/GTS unit.
Involvement in other geophysical methods is also expected.
As part of these projects, and future programs, you will be involved from the design phase, proposing innovative approaches and acquisition systems tailored to identified scientific and operational challenges.
A key aspect of the role will be contributing to the development of consolidated cost estimates and high-quality technical proposals, followed by the operational implementation of geophysical data acquisition.
In this context, you will handle the required equipment, including gravimeters and topography systems (GPS, total station), as well as other geophysical instruments.
BRGM relies both on standard data processing tools and on in-house developments, whose performance contributes to its national and international scientific reputation.
Beyond operational activities, a scientific contribution is expected to support ongoing research projects—particularly in quantum gravimetry—and to propose new research directions.
Active participation in the scientific dissemination of results, through publications and presentations at conferences or other scientific forums, is also expected.

Profile

The following skills and qualities are required:
-Strong knowledge of the main geophysical methods (electrical and electromagnetic methods, induced polarization, magnetics, NMR, gravimetry, seismics); expertise in gravimetry would be a major asset.
-Ability to independently conduct acquisition, processing, and interpretation of geophysical data, particularly in regional gravimetry and microgravimetry.
-Full command of the data processing workflow, considered a key prerequisite for the role.
-Knowledge of gravimeters and topographic equipment required for field measurements.
-Strong interest in issues related to anthropogenic risks, particularly those associated with underground cavities.
-Skills in numerical analysis and programming, with proficiency in one or more languages/environments (Matlab, Python, C, C++, Fortran, COMSOL).
-Commitment to scientific dissemination and methodological innovation.
-Ability to listen, collaborate, and respond to needs expressed in a partnership context.
-Proven teamwork skills combined with strong organizational abilities.
-Strong interest in fieldwork and active involvement in team life.
-Good analytical and synthesis skills, strong writing abilities, and proven experience in producing scientific publications.
-Personal qualities including autonomy, rigor, initiative, organizational skills, and team spirit.
-Proficiency in scientific English, both written and spoken (high level expected, e.g., TOEIC more than 860).

Working conditions

This full-time position involves travel, including medium- to long-term field assignments in France and abroad (typically 1 to 3 weeks).
Within a work environment that supports a healthy work–life balance—particularly through remote working—BRGM stands out for its culture of kindness and conviviality.
Awarded the HRS4R label in 2021, we are committed to supporting you throughout your professional career at BRGM. We provide a wide range of opportunities to develop your skills and expertise, along with prospects for career progression and geographical mobility.
At BRGM, you will benefit from several advantages, including a 13-month salary structure, additional days off (RTT), a company restaurant, sports facilities, and holiday and leisure benefits.

BRGM guarantees a transparent recruitment process. To apply, please send us your application (updated CV and cover letter) by April 19, 2026.
Please note that all our positions are open to everyone, at BRGM, we are committed to diversity!

We will review your application once the posting period has closed. If your application is shortlisted, you will be contacted for interviews with the hiring department, the HR department, and a cross-functional department.
