Permanent position

Context and contributions of the position

The position is located within the Risk Management Department, with the objective of strengthening its capabilities in data management and exploitation, providing direct support to projects. Interactions with other departments, particularly on issues of interoperability, data architecture, and resource sharing, will be possible and encouraged, while maintaining a primary focus on the projects and needs of the department.

Job description

1. Project Support and Data Engineering

The role involves active participation in operational tasks necessary for project delivery, including those that are less explored. A consistent commitment, a team-oriented mindset, and the ability to contribute pragmatically are expected. The position will specifically address the structuring, integration, and exploitation of heterogeneous scientific data. This includes ensuring, in compliance with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable):

- the structuring, integration, and quality assurance of multi-source data,
- the design and implementation of data models and databases, including geospatial databases,
- the development of data processing and integration pipelines (scripts, pipelines),
- support to scientific teams in their operational needs for data management and exploitation.

The incumbent will also contribute, in connection with the projects, to the implementation of best practices in data management, notably through participation in the development of Data Management Plans (DMP) and Software Management Plans (SMP). The incumbent may occasionally supervise interns or work-study students, helping to enhance their skills in technical and methodological aspects related to data.

2. Development of a research activity

The position holder will progressively develop an independent scientific activity, based on the challenges encountered in projects and the associated barriers in the management and exploitation of scientific data. This explicitly includes:

- identifying and formalizing scientific barriers related to data,
- preparing research projects (ANR, PEPR, Europe, etc.),
- producing scientific publications,
- developing innovative methods and tools.

Time dedicated to these activities is expected and recognized as an integral part of the position.

Profile

Desired start date: 01 December 2026
Degree: Master's (BAC+5) or Doctorate (BAC+8)
Experience: 1 - 5 years

You will notably present the following skills and qualities:
- Knowledge of the FAIR principles, with the ability to implement them in operational contexts,
- Familiarity with standards and frameworks (ISO, DCAT, INSPIRE, OGC, etc.),
- Experience handling geospatial data models and interoperable formats,
- Strong skills in data management and structuring (using languages such as UML or ontologies),
- Proficiency in databases (SQL language, PostgreSQL/PostGIS),
- Development skills (Python or equivalent),
- Ability to communicate complex results clearly and pedagogically to non-expert stakeholders,
- Team spirit, rigor, autonomy, and adaptability.

BRGM guarantees a transparent recruitment process. To apply, please send us your application (updated CV and cover letter) by 09/13/2026.

Please note that all our positions are open to everyone; at BRGM, we are committed to diversity!

We will review your application after the posting period ends. If your application is shortlisted, we will contact you for recruitment interviews during which you will meet with the hiring department, HR department, and a cross-functional department.

Working conditions

The position is designed as a research engineer role with a strong evolutionary component. It is based on a structuring balance between significant operational involvement in projects, particularly in the field of risk management, and the progressive development of an autonomous scientific activity.
An increase in responsibility towards a researcher role is expected, with the ability to lead scientific topics, engage in project development, and produce patents and publications. This trajectory relies on an initial phase of familiarization with business challenges and data environments.
The incumbent will also contribute to the dissemination of best practices in data management and engineering within the teams, in line with institutional guidelines. The position is situated in a collaborative work environment, at the interface between scientific research, data engineering, and information systems, and offers the opportunity to contribute to structuring projects with significant societal impact.

In a work environment supportive of work-life balance, notably through teleworking, BRGM stands out for its climate of kindness and friendliness.

Certified HRS4R in 2021, our aim is to support you throughout your professional life at BRGM. We provide numerous programs to develop your skills, expertise, and career advancement opportunities.
