Context and contributions of the position

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.

BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

The Hauts-de-France Regional Directorate of BRGM represents BRGM and its expertise within the region, providing support to decentralized State services and local authorities in the field of geos-ciences.

Its activities cover a wide range of topics, including groundwater resources, natural hazards (coastal risks, ground movements, underground cavities), geology applied to territorial transition, energy transition, as well as contaminated sites and soils.

Job description

Under the authority of the Regional Director, the Research Engineer in Shallow Aquifer Geochemistry contributes to work related to groundwater quality, a major issue for drinking water supply in the Hauts-de-France region.

As pollution may originate from various sources (agricultural, industrial, military, domestic, etc.), the position aims to improve the understanding of pollution sources and transfer processes in order to meet the needs of regional stakeholders.

The position is part of a multidisciplinary team of around ten specialists working in groundwater and applied geosciences.

Within the regional management team, your main duties will include:
- Design models of compound and pollutant transport in shallow aquifers;
- Organize and carry out field campaigns, analyze and interpret results, cross-reference them, and integrate them with available geological, geophysical, and hydrogeological data;
- Maintain and develop partnerships with local institutional and academic stakeholders;
- Develop and propose research projects and public policy support initiatives addressing groundwater quality issues in the Hauts-de-France region, leveraging BRGM's expertise across all geoscience disciplines;
- Communicate scientific results to stakeholders, as well as through publications and presentations at conferences or professional seminars;
- Contribute to the statutory missions of BRGM Hauts-de-France: support to public administrations, responses to external requests, and data management and archiving.
