Context and contributions of the position

Joining the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) means becoming part of the leading public establishment in the Earth sciences, bringing together 1,000 expert and enthusiastic professionals in 29 entities located in mainland France and overseas. BRGM's mission is to provide geological knowledge and an understanding of soil and subsoil phenomena, with one overriding objective: to meet the challenges of environmental change through innovative projects that have a major impact on society.
The recently created Direction for Energy and Decarbonation (DED) aims at supporting the development of carbon-free energy production and energy usage through scientific research and innovation in fields such as geothermal energy, energy storage, CO2 capture and storage, etc. Within DED, the unit “energy systems and new solutions” has the following missions:
-Integrated system modeling
-Multicriteria analysis integrating the underground into the energy transition and developing socio economic approaches towards stakeholders.
-Development of hybrid uses of the underground
-Development of new exploration and exploitation methods through coupled modeling, experimental and demonstration sites
-And more globally development of technological innovations relying on BRGM laboratories and research plateforms.

Job description

In particular, DED operates the “Geothermal Platfom”, a research infrastructure dedicated to surface geothermal energy research. It is equipped with thermodynamic machinery with a capacity of 200 kW in heating or cooling, capable of carrying out up to six test campaigns simultaneously in a completely decoupled manner.
It operates as a semi-virtual laboratory, able of simulating part of the complete system to test the technological blocks currently under development. Its research focuses on near-surface closed-loop geothermal heat exchangers, the characterization, sizing, and installation of vertical geothermal probes, hybrid heat pumps, the coupling of heat and cooling sources with geothermal energy, heat storage, and more.
In this context, you will join a team of two research engineers and one engineering student on a work-study program working on the geothermal platform.

As part of your duties, you will primarily be responsible for:
- Implementing and monitoring experiments on the platform,
- Processing and managing data measured on the platform,
- Monitoring maintenance and development/continuous improvement of the geothermal experimental platform,
- Modeling energy components (mainly geothermal heat exchangers modeled using finite elements) or multi-source, multi-use energy systems combining heat pumps, geothermal heat exchangers, waste heat recovery, etc. (modeling in TRNSYS, DYMOLA),
- Developing proposals and responding to calls for public and/or private research partnerships integrating the platform,
- Developing collaborations with external partners (particularly companies in the surface geothermal sector),
- Participating in the promotion of geothermal energy and the platform.
- Participate in research and public policy support projects integrating energy system modeling aspects beyond the geothermal platform.

Education Level : Master's degree (BAC + 5)
Experience : 1 to 5 years

As a thermal and energy engineer, you will leverage the following skills and qualities:
- Metrology concepts and implementation
- Basic knowledge of Matlab and/or Python for data analysis, visualization, and processing
- Knowledge of heat transfer and thermodynamics, renewable heat sources (heat pumps, geothermal energy, waste heat, etc.)
- Autonomy, strong initiative
- Scientific rigor
- Respect for deadlines
- Writing skills and oral fluency
- Good English skills.
