Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
The Mineral Resources Division of BRGM in Orléans aims in particular to provide solutions to social issues related to the environmental impacts of anthropogenic activities on the geosphere, particularly the exploitation of mineral resources (whether primary or secondary).
Within the Environmental and Social Assessment Unit (DRM/2ES), you will contribute to the development and scientific implementation of projects concerning the systemic assessment and environmental evaluation of primary and secondary raw materials processing chains including secondary resources from waste (mining, industrial, and urban).
This work may inform decision-making at national, European, or industrial levels.
Job description
Your main missions will be as follows:
- Analyze the sustainability of primary and secondary raw material management systems by integrating evaluation and decision-support approaches and tools (LCA, MFA);
- Contribute to improving environmental assessment methods by coupling them with other disciplines in geosciences (e.g., process simulation, geochemical modeling, etc.) and managing associated data (e.g., automated database queries);
- Participate in the unit's production efforts within the framework of institutional support projects, R&D partnership projects (ANR, ADEME, Horizon Europe) with industrials, academics, …
- Communicate and valorize your results internally and externally (deliverables and scientific papers writing, participation to conference).

You possess the following skills and qualities:
- Knowledge of environmental performance evaluation approaches based on LCA standards (ISO 14040-44) and Life Cycle Inventory databases (e.g., ecoinvent) and LCA software (e.g., Simapro, GaBi, etc.);
- Knowledge of techniques based on a systemic approach of the metabolism of the anthroposphere (e.g., Material Flow Analysis; MFA, Input-Output Analysis) and associated tools and databases (e.g., ODYM or EXIOBASE 3);
- Basic knowledge in process engineering related to the production of mineral resources (primary and secondary) or in the mineral industry (e.g., environmental monitoring, deposit studies, etc.) would be an asset, particularly experience with process simulation software (e.g., HSC Chemistry, USIMPAC);
- Previous programming experience is an asset (e.g., Python, R);
- Writing and synthesis skills to present and promote project results in writing (reports, publications) and orally (working meetings with technical or institutional audiences, scientific conferences);
- Autonomy in organizing and carrying out your work;
- Ability to integrate a multidisciplinary and transversal team;
- Pedagogical skills to share your expertise within a multidisciplinary department;
- Relational skills (internally and externally);
- Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
Working conditions
This full-time position involves travel within France and abroad (one day to one week). Holding a PhD is a preferred requirement.
