Context and contributions of the position

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France. BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

The Subsurface Knowledge and Geomodelling Directorate (DCGS) of BRGM is responsible for acquiring, consolidating, and delivering knowledge about the structures, geometries, properties, resources, and risks of the national subsurface in the form of geomodels. It provides expertise in the acquisition, processing, interpretation, analysis, and representation of geological, geophysical, geochemical, and hydrogeological data. Additionally, it serves as the repository for all subsurface data, information, and knowledge, ensuring their interpretation and delivery within shared reference frameworks as 3D/4D geological models, which underpin thematic studies in water, geo-resources, and energy transition.
You will work within this Directorate in the Geology Division, which comprises around 50 geologists and is organized into two distinct units: Geology of Basement, Orogenic Systems and Sedimentary Basins Unit (GSB) and Near Surface Geology Unit (GSA).

Job description

You have a strong interest in geological studies of sedimentary basins and/or orogenic settings, and you wish to contribute to projects that require both structural geology expertise and 3D geological modeling skills.
You are proficient in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and 3D modeling tools (Geomodeler, Leapfrog, Gocad, SKUA, etc.).
You have a solid understanding of geostatistics.
You also have proven experience as a field geologist and are motivated to carry out expert missions both in France and internationally.
With your experience, you are able to apply your skills to a wide range of studies, particularly to support public policy and meet the needs of economic stakeholders.
You are highly motivated to support the Subsurface Knowledge and Geomodelling Directorate (DCGS) in its development and to enhance your expertise through the completion of studies and 3D models in France and abroad.
You will join the team of the Geology of Basement, Orogenic Systems, and Sedimentary Basins Unit (GSB) and contribute to both research activities and operational projects on cross-cutting topics (hazards, water, storage, geothermal energy, etc.).

As part of your assignments, you will be mainly responsible for:
- Conducting structural assessments and developing three-dimensional geometric geological models by integrating surface and subsurface data;
- Providing expertise on geological infrastructure projects in France and abroad;
- Contributing your expertise in modeling and understanding geodynamic processes;
- Designing, initiating, and carrying out national, European, and international scientific research and public service projects, in France and internationally;
- Enhancing BRGM's scientific and public visibility in the field of geosciences by promoting your research results through publications and conference presentations;
- Contributing to the development of projects that integrate your area of expertise with other scientific domains covered by BRGM, such as Mineral Resources, Groundwater, Natural Hazards, Energy, and Environment, within multidisciplinary approaches.

Profile

Requested start date: 01/02/2026
Education: PhD
Experience: 1 - 5 years

You will bring the following skills and qualities:

Structural Geology Skills:
- Conducting structural analyses at various scales, geological mapping, and cross-section construction, both in the field and from literature sources.
- Producing structural diagrams and interpreting regional geology.
- In-depth understanding of different stress regimes and tectonic structures associated with brittle and ductile deformation.
- Ability to interpret seismic and borehole data.
- Identifying different geodynamic contexts and the associated processes.

3D Geological Modeling Skills:
- Proficiency in one or more 3D geological modeling software packages.
- Ability to integrate and synthesize multiple geological and geophysical data sources into 3D geological models.
- Knowledge of geostatistical concepts to understand and adjust model parameters.

Communication and Collaboration:
- Ability to effectively communicate structural geology analyses and 3D model results to internal and external stakeholders.
- Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams (geologists, geophysicists, hydrogeologists, reservoir engineers, etc.).
- Participation in presentations, workshops, or conferences to share findings and advancements.

Scientific Monitoring:
- Keeping up to date with technological developments in 3D geological modeling.
- Contributing to the development of new methodologies and technologies to optimize interpretation and modeling processes.
