Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
You will be working within the Subsurface Knowledge and Geomodeling Division (DCGS), in the Geophysics and Deep Remote Sensing Unit (GTP). This team is dedicated to developing innovative geophysical and satellite-based methods for imaging and monitoring subsurface energy and mineral resources.
As part of this role, you will contribute to R&D and operational seismic projects covering a wide range of topics, including mineral resources, geothermal energy, CO₂ storage, and geological mapping.
You may also apply your expertise to projects within the Geophysics and Surface Remote Sensing Unit (GTS), focusing on areas such as risk assessment related to gravitational instabilities (landslides, cavities, etc.), water resource evaluation, and geotechnical studies.
Job description
As part of your activities, you will be primarily responsible for:
- Actively contributing to innovation in seismic acquisition (e.g., new sensors, sources, optimized geometries, DAS);
- Developing seismic processing, imaging, and inversion methods (e.g., land/marine, static corrections, denoising, demultiple, 5D regularization, velocity model building, migration, FWI, QI);
- Designing, organizing, supervising, and/or contributing to field campaigns in marine or land seismics, processing, interpreting, and utilizing acquired data and results;
- Participating in the development of collaborative research programs, public policy support, and commercial projects related to seismic methods;
- Responding to project calls in partnership with research institutes and companies;
- Scientifically disseminating and communicating results through high-impact publications (A-ranked journals) and presentations at international conferences;
- Co-supervising PhD students and postdocs;
- Contributing to BRGM's Quality and Environmental Management System (SMQ/SME).
Profile

Experience : 1-5 years
You hold a Master's degree, an Engineering degree, or a PhD in geophysics and have a mandatory first experience of 1 to 5 years in a research institute or a geophysics company, with expertise in seismic acquisition, processing, imaging, and/or inversion.
You will bring the following skills and qualities:
- Expertise in active seismic methods (reflection, MASW, VSP, land/marine);
- Expertise in seismic processing and imaging: static corrections, denoising, demultiple, 5D regularization, velocity model building, migration, FWI, QI...;
- Proficiency in professional seismic processing software (e.g., Viridien Geovation, AspenTech, Shearwater Reveal) is considered a plus;
- Programming skills (e.g., Fortran, MPI, Matlab, Python);
- Passion for research and innovation;
- Strong scientific communication skills (A-ranked publications, conferences);
- Ability to listen and collaborate in a partnership-based environment;
- Teamwork skills;
- Analytical mindset and strong writing abilities;
- Autonomy, rigor, and excellent organizational skills;
- Fluent in English, both spoken and written.
Working conditions
This full-time position requires medium- to long-term travel in France and abroad.
