Context and contributions of the position

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.

BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

The position to be filled is attached to the RMVT unit (Ground hazards) of BRGM's DRIS (Risks Division).

The unit's missions are to develop approaches for characterizing, simulating and anticipating the risks of ground movements, in order to strengthen the resilience of territories: landslides, rock falls, debris flows, collapses/slumps linked to ground cavities, soil erosion and sediment transfers, “urban” geotechnics, clay shrink-swell.

For each of these risks, the Unit is developing predictive approaches using metamodels to anticipate and quantify induced risks.

Job description

The Researcher / Engineer will be responsible for the following tasks:
- Contribution to public or industrial research projects on the unit's themes (natural hazards);
- Analysis of geotechnical reports, diagnostics, hazard assessment, susceptibility and hazard mapping, etc.;
- Modeling of instabilities and their impact on the environment ;
- Modeling of gravity instabilities, in particular landslides, debris flows and rock hazards;
- Studies, expert appraisals and support for administrations in the field of natural hazards (including field trips);
- Response to tenders (technical and financial bids);
- Contribution to working groups related to the unit's themes;
- Drafting of reports and scientific papers.

As a junior engineer in the team, you will be primarily responsible for carrying out studies and expert appraisals in the field of natural hazards, particularly gravity instabilities.

You will be required to work in support of BRGM's territorial divisions or on projects directly managed by the Risks Division and other operational divisions. You will contribute to project set-ups and study proposals. You will be supervised by project managers and your unit manager.

As part of the projects, you will frequently travel in France (and more rarely abroad) for field visits, meetings and participation in scientific community events.

You will need the following skills and qualities:

- General knowledge of geosciences (geology, hydrogeology, soil and rock mechanics);
- Experience in modeling, e.g. in continuum (hydro)mechanics (type Finite Elements), failure calculations, propagation (blocks, slides), applied in particular to hydro-gravitational instabilities and underground structures;
- Intermediate skills in GIS, database handling, development of data analysis/processing tools;
- Notions of AI would be a plus;
