Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
BRGM is developing integrated approaches for the management of natural risks impacting soil, subsoil and coastal areas, as well as risks resulting from human activities linked to sites and soils degraded by industrial activities or former mining activities, with a view to promote more sustainable regional planning and management.
In this context, the Risk Department provides its expertise in the management of risks related to soil and subsoil, whether natural or anthropogenic.
Job description
The position offered is based within this department in the RSSP unit (Risks from Polluted Sites and Soils), which is more specifically involved in supporting public authorities on issues related to polluted sites and soils, e.g., through the drafting of national guidelines, studies and expertise. But also through research and the development of innovative processes for soil remediation etc., using BRGM's experimental laboratories and in particular the PRIME platform (Platform for Remediation and Innovation in Environmental Metrology).
You will be mainly responsible for :
- Participate in designing, setting up and carrying out experiments in the laboratory and in the field;
- Develop innovative approaches involving technological/conceptual breakthroughs within the RSSP team's multidisciplinary projects or topics;
- Develop and maintain your national/international network of partners in order to initiate research projects (regional, national and European) and to support public policies in relation to the themes described above, and actively contribute to their implementation;
- Carry out expert and/or third-party assessments in relation to the unit's topics;
- Promote the results in the form of scientific publications, patents and participation in conferences (national and/or international) and reports.

You will demonstrate the following skills and abilites:
- Knowledge of the scientific and technical issues and challenges associated with the Polluted Sites and Soils thematic;
- Expertise in this field: environment and/or hydrogeology and/or remediation;
- Skills and know-how in designing, setting up and monitoring field tests, multi-scale experimental systems and associated monitoring;
- Knowledge of microbiology and emerging pollutants would be a plus;
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team (modelling, thermodynamics, physics-chemistry of interfaces, electro-chemistry, geochemistry, microbiology, geophysics, digital sciences, experimental science, etc.);
- Ability to communicate and develop scientific results (patents, A-rank publications, international conferences);
- Ability to communicate and disseminate knowledge internally (supervision of trainees, PhD students, post-docs) or externally (university or professional training courses, conferences);
- Have a national/international network of public/private partners to initiate project set-ups (regional, national and European);
- Compliance with quality assurance procedures and conditions of use of experimental devices ;
- Ability for constructive interaction, analytical skills and ability to put forward proposals for the development of business opportunities;
- Initiative, organisation and autonomy;
- Fluency in English (reading, writing and speaking).
Working conditions
You have a degree (Bac+5 or PhD) and ideally have experience of supervising interns, PhD students, post-docs, etc. This full-time position involves national and international travel (field tests, conferences, etc.), the frequency and duration of which will depend on the project.
