Context and contributions of the position
BRGM is developing integrated approaches for the management of natural risks impacting soil, subsoil and coastal areas, as well as risks resulting from human activities linked to sites and soils degraded by industrial activities or former mining activities, with a view to promote more sustainable regional planning and management.
In this context, the Risk Department provides its expertise in the management of risks related to soil and subsoil, whether natural or anthropogenic.
The position offered is based within this department in the RSSP unit (Risks from Polluted Sites and Soils), which is more specifically involved in supporting public authorities on issues related to polluted sites and soils, e.g., through the drafting of national guidelines, studies and expertise.
But also through research and the development of innovative processes for soil remediation etc., using BRGM's experimental laboratories and in particular the PRIME platform (Platform for Remediation and Innovation in Environmental Metrology).
Job description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
As part of your duties, you will be required to:
- Contribute to the development of methodologies for taking account of soil health in the management of polluted sites and soils, in collaboration with the players in the sectors concerned;
- Develop and maintain your national/international network of partners;
- Set up research projects (regional, national and European) and support public policies in connection with the themes described above, and actively contribute to their implementation;
- Contribute to strategic thinking on the activity and to regulatory monitoring;
- Carry out tasks relating to the annual public policy support programs (methodological guide, good practice and development of subjects of interest) on SSP themes in line with regulations;
- Promote the results in the form of scientific publications, patents and participation in conferences (national and/or international) and reports;
- Contribute to the BRGM Formation programme (internal and external training).

You will have the following skills and qualities:
- Knowledge of the scientific and technical issues and challenges associated with degraded soils (Contaminated Land and mining environments);
- Knowledge of current tools for measuring the diversity and behaviour of various types of pollutants in the different compartments of ecosystems;
- Knowledge and mastery of the concepts of evaluation of ecosystem services/soil functions at different spatial scales in order to analyse their consideration in strategic choices for the rehabilitation of degraded sites and territorial management;
- Mastery of the main properties, ecological functions and services of soils;
- Skills in designing, setting up and monitoring multi-scale experimental systems and associated monitoring as part of research and development projects;
- Ability to apply a scientific approach to solving new problems;
- Knowledge and mastery of soil construction/re-functionalisation processes in a Contaminated Land context (soil engineering techniques in particular);
- Mastery of soil construction/re-functionalisation processes (following the treatment/clean-up of degraded sites).
- Ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team (environmentalist, hydrogeologist, hydrogeochemist, etc.).
- Successful experience in setting up projects (regional, national and European) / drafting tenders and i in carrying out soil reconstruction / re-functionalisation projects ;
- Good interpersonal and communication skills;
- Ability to write and promote scientific results (patent, A-rank publication, international conferences);
- Fluency in French and English (read, written and spoken).
Working conditions
This full-time position involves national and international travel,the frequency and duration of which will depend on the project.
