Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications
Initial assignment to GEODERIS for 3 years, renewable.
Job description
You will be mainly responsible for:
Carry out expertise and in-depth studies to assess the post-mining issues, particularly ‘ground movements' and ‘gas emissions' hazards related to old mining sites, involving inventory and mapping of abandonned structures and works, assessment of ground failure hazards and evaluation of risks, as well as recommending preventive measures for mitigation. this includes:
- participating in interdisciplinary studies including hydrological and geotechnical studies
- providing expertise and decision-making support to the local authorities (DREAL) in charge of post-mining management
- contributing to the proposal and management of the steering of scientific watch and applied research operations and initiatives, in collaboration with the GIP's members (BRGM and INERIS) and other partners
- providing support in emergency situations (on-call duty)
disseminate expert works and lessons learned through presentations, communications and publications across various contexts.
Profile
Requested start date: 01/10/2025
Education: MSc or equivalent higher education qualification
Experience: 5 - 10 years
You will demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
- Solid knowledge of soil and rock mechanics;
- Good experience of hydrogeotechnical investigation techniques;
- GIS skills (particularly QGis); Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team;
- Strong organization and analytical skills with high-level commitment in the quality of work;
- Good oral and written communication skills, and ability to interact with both technical audiences and general public.
Knowledge of the extractive industries and the post-mining regulations is a plus.
