Context and contributions of the position
The main missions of the Réunion Regional Office, which employs 11 people, are to support public policies and research. With particular regard to natural hazards and the coastline, BRGM is involved in improving knowledge, risk prevention and the development of decision-making tools. It mainly co-manages Réunion's coastal observatory with the DREAL (Regional department for environment, planning and housing). BRGM also conducts projects in other territories in the Indian Ocean area.
Job description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
As part of your duties, your main responsibilities will be as follows:
- To meet the needs of local and regional authorities by proposing, setting up and managing research and public policy support projects on coastal hazards and adaptation to climate change;
- Conducting studies and expert appraisals relating to hydro-morpho-sedimentary dynamics and natural coastal hazards (coastal erosion, coastline retreat, marine submersion, effects of climate change, etc.) to support decentralised government departments and local authorities in managing the coastline;
- As part of the Réunion coastal observatory, take part in monitoring, analysis, expert appraisal and development activities in support of the Project Lead and in liaison with external partners;
- Contribute to the preparation of Coastal Hazard Prevention Plans (hazard characterisation, analysis of requests, field visits, hazard mapping and regulatory zoning, participation in public meetings, etc.);
- Take part in field measurement campaigns (preparation, data acquisition, deployment of sensors);
- Interpret and analyse technical results, draft study reports, present outputs and attend meetings;
- Manage and participate in projects in compliance with the BRGM quality and environmental management system, costs and deadlines;
- Help to promote the theme internally and externally;
- Develop a network of scientific partners and local technical service contractors;
- Contribute to the development of projects (communication, scientific added value);
- Monitor technical and regulatory developments.

Education : MSc or equivalent higher education qualification
Experience : 5 – 10 years
You have an MSc or 5 to 8 years of higher education and 5 to 10 years of experience in coastal hydrodynamics and/or coastal geomorphology.
At least 5 years of successful experience in managing coastal and/or marine project/studies is required, and you should demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
- Recognised expertise in coastal hazards, coastal geomorphology and coastal hydrodynamics.
- Excellent knowledge of the natural processes that cause coastal hazards (in particular coastal erosion and marine submersion).
- Experience with in-situ experimentation and processing of hydrodynamic and topo-bathymetric data;
- Proficiency in mapping and GIS. (Qgis and Arcgis);
- Proficiency in a programming language (Python, SQL, Matlab, etc.).
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing (including in English) to any audience (elected representatives, scientists, general public, etc.);
- Experience in complex project management and multidisciplinary teamwork;
- Skills in numerical modelling of coastal hazards;
- Proficiency with tools for processing satellite images, photographs, and photogrammetry techniques would be a plus.
- Knowledge of the dynamics of island shorelines would be appreciated.
Working conditions
This full-time position requires frequent travel across the island and occasional travel to mainland France or other territories in the Indian Ocean. A category B driving license is required.
