Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
The Regional Directorate of Centre Val de Loire (5 people) is dedicated to supporting activities and scientific research on natural hazards, as well as cross-cutting topics such as hydrogeology or geothermal energy. You will collaborate with partners from both the public and private sectors.
These activities are conducted in partnership with the BRGM's Risk Management Department (based in Orléans) and the network of experts and researchers from other regions.
Job description
Alongside projects aimed at improving knowledge, you will primarily be responsible for:
- Regularly carrying out expert missions to support administrative bodies while being responsible for regional thematic databases (BDCAV and BDMVT);
- Assessing issues related to natural hazards at different territorial scales (from individual plots to regions, including EPCI), in order to propose scientific, operational, or research programs that are suitable, relevant, and even innovative for our partners;
- Developing a network of partnerships with local authorities and decentralized State services (DDT, DREAL), with a portion of the role dedicated to this task;
- Implementing research and development (R&D) projects in alignment with the BRGM's scientific strategy, notably by fostering collaborations with regional academic institutions;
- Collaborating with engineering researchers working on cross-cutting topics (hydrogeology, geophysics, geological modeling, etc.) within interdisciplinary projects.
Full-time position, based in Orléans, with regular travel expected within the Centre-Val de Loire region. Travel to other regions, and potentially internationally, may also be considered.
Without altering the nature of the work, the assignment for this position may evolve while remaining within the Orléans Scientific and Technical Center, depending on organizational needs and opportunities.
Profile

Experience : 10 – 15 years
You will need to demonstrate the following competencies and qualities:
- Strong knowledge of natural hazard concepts (hazard, exposure, vulnerability);
- In-depth understanding of the natural processes behind hazards (landslides, rockfalls, subsidence/collapse linked to cavities, etc.);
- Expertise in the scientific processing and analysis of spatial and temporal data (proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Matlab, Rstudio, etc.);
- Experience with GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS);
- Knowledge of regolith geology or sedimentary basins is required;
- Interest in fieldwork and strong naturalist skills are highly appreciated;
- Good learning, adaptability, and teamwork skills;
- Autonomy and strong technical writing skills for reports, scientific articles, and presentation of scientific and technical results;
- Strong verbal communication skills and the ability to lead meetings;
- Initiative and the ability to propose new projects.
