Context and contributions of the position

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.

BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

The Grand Est Regional Division of BRGM consists of around twenty staff members spread across three locations: Nancy, Reims, and Strasbourg. It provides support to government agencies, public institutions, local authorities, and objective-based agencies, and conducts research in all fields of Earth sciences.

BRGM is actively involved in both public policy support and scientific research related to the understanding and management of natural hazards, including landslides, rockfalls, collapses, erosion, and surface runoff.

You will join the regional team based in Nancy, which includes, among others, five natural hazards engineers and three technicians

Job description

Your main responsibilities will include:
- Researching and analyzing known historical events within the study area;
- Contributing to hazard mapping by performing probability/intensity cross-analyses of events;
- Participating in fieldwork campaigns related to the mapping of superficial formations and/or gravitational instability phenomena;
- Contributing to the preparation of input data and modeling of erosion and runoff processes;
- Writing technical study reports, attending working and planning meetings, as well as project follow-up meetings with partners or clients;
- Participating in local expert assessments frequently requested following the occurrence of damage or disturbances related to gravitational instabilities (rockfalls, collapses/subsidence, landslides, debris flows), as well as possible public meetings ;
- Applying BRGM's quality management standards and procedures.

Experience : 1 – 5 years

Required skills and qualifications :
- Good knowledge of gravitational instability phenomena;
- Strong skills in GIS processing (raster calculation, combination, comparison, and editing of vector files, etc.);
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to report proactively;
- Excellent writing skills;
- Attention to detail, particularly when researching data from archives;
- Strong analytical and observational skills, especially during fieldwork;
- Valid category B driving license required.
