Context and contributions of the position
Joining the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) means becoming part of the leading public establishment in the Earth sciences, bringing together 1,000 expert and enthusiastic professionals in 29 entities located in mainland France and overseas.
BRGM's mission is to provide geological knowledge and an understanding of soil and subsoil phenomena, with one overriding objective: to meet the challenges of environmental change through innovative projects that have a major impact on society.
The aim of BRGM's Mineral Resources Division is to carry out a comprehensive, multidisciplinary study of the various aspects of the life cycle of primary ores and geomaterials extracted from the subsoil and secondary ores and geomaterials derived from recycling. It looks at the various stages of the value chains: from the mechanisms of deposit genesis, exploration and characterisation of rocks and minerals, to ore and waste processing, including the geopolitical, economic, environmental and societal assessment of the upstream and downstream sectors.
Job description
As part of the challenge of supplying the mineral raw materials that are critical for the energy and digital transitions, the Mineral Resources Division is working to develop our knowledge of the country's mineral potential and the geological processes behind mineralisation. It is fully involved in the Mineral Resources Inventory project, as well as in scientific projects at both national (PEPR-Sous-sol bien commun) and European level.
The Mineral Resources Division also assists international players in developing the skills of their counterparts and in implementing exploration programmes for critical mineral resources.
As part of your duties, you will be required to:
Participating to the technical operations of the Mineral Resources Division's projects in France and abroad in the field of industrial rocks and minerals;
- Contribute to research and expertise activities in the field of industrial rocks and minerals, in support of public policies, via in-house or partnership research projects or in support of French or international industries;
- Keeping a technical and economic watch on activities in the various industrial rock and minerals sectors;
- Represent BRGM in the activities of the Resources group of the Société de l'Industrie Minérale (SIM) as an expert in industrial rocks and minerals;
- Integrate into projects the notion of rationalisation and preservation of resources and the circular economy;
- Contribute to the collaboration and construction of joint projects with BRGM teams working on environmental assessments of innovative processes and mineral characterisation;
- Help to raise the awareness of European institutions for industrial rocks and minerals and, more generally, geomaterials;
- Carrying out geological studies and prospecting for industrial rocks and minerals;
- Collect and interpret data on industrial rocks and minerals, carrying out inventories, exploiting and valorizing the information available in scientific and cartographic tools;
- Manage data within BRGM's thematic databases on mineral resources;
- Participate in the scientific dissemination of the work, in particular by producing summary documents, expert reports and/or scientific publications.
