Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
The BRGM Occitanie Regional Directorate's primary mission is to support government services, target agencies, local authorities, and public institutions, as well as to conduct research activities across all fields of Earth sciences.
You hold an engineering degree or a Master's degree (Level 2) in hydrogeology or Earth sciences, and ideally have at least 1 to 2 years of experience in groundwater quantitative management and the study of natural hydrosystems.
Job description
As part of your duties, you will be mainly responsible for :
In coordination with the BRGM Regional Director and the research engineers of the BRGM Occitanie team :
- Conduct studies and participate in managing research projects or supporting public policies in the field of groundwater management (quantitative and qualitative characterization of groundwater resources, aquifer potential, groundwater-surface water interactions, coastal aquifers and salinity issues, hydrological modeling of aquifer functioning, study of solutions such as managed aquifer recharge, etc.), in compliance with BRGM's quality management system
- Provide technical expertise and support in groundwater management: site interventions as needed (expertise, instrumentation, and/or in situ measurements), review of files, collection, processing, and formatting of public data
- Promote and disseminate results through report writing, meeting minutes, and oral and written presentations.
This full-time position, based in Montpellier, involves regular travel throughout the Occitanie region (a valid driver's license is required), mainly within the former Languedoc Roussillon area, but may also include missions lasting several days or weeks in Toulouse depending on the needs of the Occitanie regional directorate. Occasional travel within mainland France, notably to the Scientific and Technical Center in Orléans, is also expected.

You will apply the following skills and qualities :
- Strong foundation in geology applied to hydrogeology; knowledge of the hydrogeological context of the Occitanie region is a plus
- Good command of the various disciplines of the Water Cycle (hydrogeology, hydrology, hydrodynamics) on both quantitative and qualitative aspects
- Knowledge and initial experience in modeling (hydrogeology and/or hydraulics)
- Skills in hydrogeological instrumentation and measurements (fieldwork and data interpretation)
- Experience with GIS (QGIS), databases, and data processing
- Collaborative work mindset and ability
- Attentiveness to partners and adaptability to their needs
- Tact, ease in partnership relations, and ability to tailor communication to different audiences
- Autonomy, rigor, and sense of responsibility
- Initiative and proactivity for activity development
- Excellent writing skills
- Valid driver's license (Category B) mandatory.
