Context and contributions of the position

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.

BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

As part of its national geological service activities, BRGM is recruiting a geological engineer for the department of Geology, Geophysics and Geomodelling (DCGS) within the Geology of Basements, Orogen and Sedimentary Basins unit (GSB).

The department of Geology, Geophysics and Geomodelling's mission is to acquire, consolidate and render, in the form of a unified global model, knowledge of the structures and geometries, properties, resources and risks of the national subsoil.

The department of Geology, Geophysics and Geomodelling works closely with all the company's operational departments, providing them with basic geological data, and capitalizing on and banking the data produced. The missions of the Geology of Basements, Orogen and Sedimentary Basins unit are to acquire, develop, map and model geological knowledge of sedimentary basins and basement domains, onshore and offshore, both nationally and internationally.

Job description

Your main responsabilities and duties will be to :

- Participate in the harmonization of subsurface geological data in connection with projects associated with the creation and organization of Geological Repositories (lithostratigraphic units, geological events, geological boundaries, lithotectonic units) and synthesize the resulting knowledge.
- Participate in meetings and exchanges with geological experts from the various BRGM departments to better integrate the results of research studies into the repositories.
- Participate in discussions on the improvement of data models and lexicons associated with tools used to capture information related to subsurface knowledge.
- Act as an interface between geological experts, geomaticians and computer scientists, and take part in discussions on the design and development of digital tools.
- Participate where necessary in field missions aimed at improving the harmonization of geological maps.

Profile

Requested start date : as soon as possible
Education : MSc or equivalent higher education qualification
Experience : Beginner

You will mobilize the following skills:
- General geologist with an acculturation to data structuring, organization and management
- Competence in geological mapping with a mastery of geological cross-sectioning exercises and ease with the notion of representativeness scale.
- Experience of geological mapping in the field
- Mastery of digital field tools (Qfield, Stereonet, Strabospost...).
- Proficiency in GIS tools (Qgis, ArcGis...)
- Ability to synthesize
- Willingness to acquire skills in geology disciplines not yet mastered.
- Rigor and autonomy.
- Ability to work as part of a team involving all the department of Geology, Geophysics and Geomodelling experts.
- Good communication skills (oral and written) and good interpersonal skills.
Fluency in English.
