Context and contributions of the position
BRGM – French Geological Survey's main purpose is to support State services, public institutions and local authorities, as well as the economic sector. It carries out actions and R&D studies in all fields and applications of soil and subsurface, notably the management of risks related to contaminated sites and soils.
Our interventions in this area take place in a context where anthropogenic pressures and those related to climate change require particular attention to the influence of climate change on the solutions considered for the treatment of contaminated sites and soils and their impact on the quantitative and qualitative state of the groundwater resource.
This objective involves improving knowledge in hydrogeology (functioning of aquifers), their qualitative and quantitative management, the study of their vulnerability and the recommendation of measures necessary to optimize any treatment and their preservation. These actions are carried out in various formats, notably through R&D and support for public policies and by providing technical support to State services.
Job description
Your missions will be:
-Take charge of the hydrogeology component within projects dedicated to Contaminated Sites and Soils (behavior of pollutants, transfer mechanisms),
- Participate in projects related to the development of the Contaminated Sites and Soils (SSP) methodology, in particular the "groundwater" component (standardisation, ministry guidance): development of investigation strategies, carrying out groundwater assessments, interpretation of hydrogeological and hydrochemical data, analysis of contaminant plume transport and evaluation of issues (vulnerability, targets...),
- Contribute to and take responsibility for the numerical modelling component of flow and contaminant transport in saturated and unsaturated zones (use of software such as Modflow, Feflow, Marthe...), possibly coupled chemistry-transport modelling (Marthe-phreeqC...),
- Use analytical modelling tools for contaminant transport (TRAC, MISP, ...).

Experience: 5 - 10 years
You will notably draw on the following skills and qualities :
- Excellent writing skills (reports, minutes, possibly scientific articles);
- Experience or interest in data management (databases and data validation routines) and in instrumentation used in hydrogeology;
- Autonomy, rigor and a sense of responsibility;
- Listening skills, analytical thinking and the ability to propose initiatives for activity development;
- Interpersonal ease, ability to adapt your communication to different audiences;
- Interest in collaborative work within multidisciplinary teams (Contaminated Sites and Soils, hydrogeology, geology, geophysics, digital) and with stakeholders who may be geographically dispersed ;
- Use of data management tools and quantitative and qualitative modelling,
- Mastery of different disciplines of Contaminated Sites and Soils management and the Great Water Cycle (hydrogeology, hydrology, hydrodynamics, hydrogeochemistry) and of hydrogeological processes;
- Ability to organise and lead field missions related to soils and water and environmental quality (sampling and sample collection, on-site analyses...);
- Knowledge of at least one of the following would be a plus: social sciences and humanities and nature-based solutions.
