Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
The Pays-de-la-Loire Regional Directorate of BRGM is responsible for representing BRGM and its expertise within the Region, providing support to decentralized State services and local authorities in the field of geosciences.
The Directorate works on a range of topics including natural hazards (cavity and coastal risks), hydrogeology (management of piezometric monitoring networks), geothermal energy, and contaminated sites and soils.
Job description
The Pays-de-la-Loire Regional Directorate of BRGM is responsible for representing BRGM and its expertise within the Region, providing support to decentralized State services and local authorities in the field of geosciences.
The Directorate works on a range of topics including natural hazards (cavity and coastal risks), hydrogeology (management of piezometric monitoring networks), geothermal energy, and contaminated sites and soils.
The Natural Hazards Engineer contributes to the assessment, prevention, and management of natural hazards (landslides, collapses, rockfalls, flooding, coastal erosion, etc.). The position provides support to public policies, local authorities, and State services. The engineer delivers both scientific and operational expertise, from diagnostic studies to the drafting of prevention or mitigation solutions.
Within the regional management team, your main duties will include:
• Carry out studies related to the mapping of landslide hazards (collapses, rockfalls, landslides) at municipal and/or departmental scales
• Contribute to the development of Natural Risk Prevention Plans (PPRN) and participate in public meetings
• Conduct expert assessments within the framework of support to public authorities and natural disaster responses
• Organize and carry out fieldwork required for landslide hazard studies
• Produce technical reports and expert assessments for local authorities or partners
• Prepare project proposals (public policy support projects, research projects, commercial projects)
• Manage and coordinate projects
• Provide occasional support on coastal risk issues
• Promote and disseminate results (scientific publications, written and oral communications, outreach activities)
• Participate in scientific and technological monitoring in the field of natural hazards

You will draw on the following skills and competencies:
• Strong command of natural risk concepts (hazard, exposure, vulnerability).
• Knowledge of natural processes (landslides, erosion, rockfalls, underground cavities, sinkholes, etc.) and geology (map interpretation, field surveys, site investigations).
• Geotechnical expertise, both in fieldwork (naturalistic approach) and analytical methods (slope stability analysis, rockfall trajectory modeling, etc.).
• Proficiency in Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS, QGIS) and regulatory frame-works (PPRN, zoning regulations, etc.).
• An asset: knowledge of abandoned underground slate mines.
Personal qualities: rigor, autonomy, strong observational skills, good writing and interpersonal abili-ties, ability to work within multidisciplinary teams, capacity to communicate and present results clear-ly to both specialist and non-specialist audiences, willingness to conduct fieldwork, and ability to ma-nage projects.
This is a full-time position.
Working conditions
Regular travel within the Pays de la Loire region is required, with occasional travel across mainland France and, potentially, overseas territories. The role involves fieldwork in a wide range of environments and conditions. A company vehicle will be provided.
