Context and contributions of the position

Joining the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) means becoming part of the leading public establishment in the Earth sciences, bringing together 1,000 expert and enthusiastic professionals in 29 entities located in mainland France and overseas.

BRGM's mission is to provide geological knowledge and an understanding of soil and subsoil phenomena, with one overriding objective: to meet the challenges of environmental change through innovative projects that have a major impact on society.

BRGM's Mineral Resources Division aims to conduct a comprehensive, multidisciplinary study of the various aspects of the life cycle of ores, geomaterials and primary mineral resources extracted from the subsoil, as well as secondary resources produced by recycling.

The division studies the various stages in the value chain, from the mechanisms by which deposits are formed, the exploration and characterisation of rocks and minerals, through to the processing of ores and waste, including the geopolitical, economic, environmental and societal assessment of the upstream and downstream sectors.

Job description

As part of the challenge of supplying critical raw materials for the energy and digital transitions, the Mineral Resources Division is working to develop our knowledge of France's mining potential and the geological processes behind mineralisation. In particular, it is fully involved in the National Mineral Resources Inventory project, as well as in national (PEPR-Sous-sol bien commun) and European scientific projects.

The Mineral Resources Division also assists international players in developing the skills of their counterparts and in implementing exploration programmes for critical substances.

As part of your duties, you will be required to:

- Contribute to the National Mineral Resources Inventory, by carrying out geological and metallogenic syntheses, interpreting existing data and data currently being acquired (geophysical and geochemical), and taking part in any field campaigns;
- Participate in the set-up and technical operations of the Mineral Resources Division's mineral resources projects in France and abroad;
- Set up, manage and participate in research projects to understand mineralising systems and/or to develop exploration methods applicable to their discovery, from project set-up to management;
- Contribute to updating existing data in the institution's thematic databases;
- Promote the scientific value of the work, in particular through the production of summary documents, scientific publications and participation in national and international conferences.

Profile

Starting date : September 1st 2025
Type of contract : Permanent position
Qualification : Ph.D.
Experience : 1 - 5 years

You will have the following skills and qualities:

- Excellent geoscientific knowledge of metallogenic systems in the context of sedimentary basins (intracontinental and/or oceanic systems). Experience in Precambrian contexts would be highly appreciated (e.g. greenstone belts);
- Skills in structural analysis of hydrothermal mineralised systems in the context of basins or Precambrian tectonics;
- Knowledge of mining prospecting methods (geochemistry, geophysics, drilling) and the various stages of a mining project;
- Familiarity with and mastery of GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS) and data processing tools;
- Proficiency in analytical methods for petrological and mineralogical characterisation (optical and electronic microscopy, microprobe, LA-ICP-MS, etc.).
- Strong oral and written communication skills in French and English (reports, conference presentations, scientific publications);
- Excellent interpersonal skills, willingness to work in the field and ability to work as part of a team;
- Initiative.

Knowledge of 3D geological modelling tools (e.g. Geomodeller, Surpac, Leapfrog Geo, etc.) and/or digital modelling would be an advantage.
