Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 25 bases in Mainland and Overseas France. BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
Job description
The Water Directorate's mission is to provide solutions to societal needs regarding water resource management and the environmental impacts of human activities on the geosphere.
You will join the Aquifer Numerical Modeling Unit (MNA) to primarily contribute to the Aqui-FR project funded by the OFB. This is a collaborative project between five research organizations: Armines, BRGM, CNRS, ENS, and Météo-France. Its goal is to deploy a national-scale platform for modeling groundwater resources for monitoring, seasonal forecasting, and climate change projections. It began in 2014 and is based on integrating a set of existing applications, often at the regional level, in collaboration with water managers.
These applications are all powered by homogeneous meteorological or climate data at the national level and should eventually provide a seamless overview of groundwater changes across the entire territory.
The activities of the MNA Unit combine naturalist observations, field investigations using approaches from earth sciences, aquifer monitoring, methodological developments, creation, maintenance, and dissemination of digital simulation tools, and modeling of flow and transport in aquifer systems, with the aim of supporting public policies, advancing research, and providing services to the industrial sector (both national and international) for optimized resource management and support in adapting hydrosystems to transitions related to global changes.
You will be required to carry out the following tasks:
- Contribute to the OFB Aqui-FR research project on the development of mesh-based hydrogeological models of the platform in collaboration with project partners (CNRS, ENS, and Météo-France). The management and quantitative and qualitative protection of groundwater resources, particularly in connection with surface waters and climate change;
- Model underground flows in connection with surface waters (aquifer-river exchange and urban network), and the impacts of climate change (projection of climate scenarios);
- Contribute, when appropriate, to the development of public or private research projects, support for public policies, and international cooperation;
- Highlight the results in the form of technical reports, publications.
Profile
You will mobilize the following skills and qualities:
- Strong knowledge in hydrology, hydrogeology, and their relationships with climate change and surface waters;
- Regular practice in modeling hydrosystems including groundwater flow, surface water, and surface water balance calculation (SOFTWARE MARTHE, MODFLOW, FEFLOW, ...);
- Knowledge of climate scenario projections at different spatial scales for impact studies in hydrology is appreciated;
- Experience with parameter optimization tools and uncertainty management (PEST) appreciated ;
- Knowledge and use of AI tools for hydrogeological modeling appreciated
- Interpersonal skills, a taste for teamwork, strong motivation, organization and rigor in carrying out, delivering work, and respecting contractual clauses;
- Initiative and creativity;
- Good communication skills, both oral and written, to present the scientific and technical results of projects (publications, articles, conference presentations);
- Proficiency in English, written and spoken.
You hold a Master's degree or a PhD with prior experience or a postdoctoral position, preferably completed abroad. This full-time position involves travel within mainland France.
Working conditions
The position is to be filled as part of a fixed-term project contract (CDI) with an estimated duration of about 2 years.
