Context and contributions of the position
The Water Directorate's mission is to provide solutions to societal needs in terms of water resource management and the environmental impacts of human activities on the geosphere. You will join the Aquifer Numerical Modeling Unit (MNA) to primarily contribute to the Aqui-FR project, funded by the OFB.
This is a collaborative project involving five research organizations: Armines, BRGM, CNRS, ENS, and Météo-France. The goal of the project is to deploy a national-scale platform for modeling groundwater resources, aimed at monitoring, seasonal forecasting, and projections under climate change.
The project began in 2014 and is based on integrating a set of existing applications, often at a regional scale, in collaboration with water managers.
These applications are all driven by meteorological or climatic data that are homogeneous at the national level and are expected to provide a seamless view of groundwater evolution across the entire territory in the long term.
Job description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
The activities of the MNA Unit involve naturalistic observations, field investigations using earth science approaches, aquifer monitoring, methodological developments, the design, maintenance, and dissemination of digital simulation tools, modeling of flow and transport in aquifer systems, with the goal of supporting public policies, advancing research, and offering services to the industrial sector (both national and international) for optimal resource management.
You will be mainly responsible for:
- Contribute to the OFB Aqui-FR research project on the development of mesh models in hydrogeology for the platform, in collaboration with project partners (CNRS, ENS, and Météo-France).
- Manage and protect quantitative and qualitative groundwater resources, particularly in relation to surface waters and climate change.
- Model groundwater flow in relation to surface waters (aquifer-river exchange and urban networks), the impacts of climate change (climate scenario projections).
Contribute, where appropriate, to the design of public or private research projects, public policy support, and international cooperation.
- Disseminate results in the form of technical reports, publications.
Profile
Requested start date : 01/05/2025
Education : PhD
Experience : 1 - 5 years.
You hold a PhD with prior postdoctoral experience, preferably obtained abroad.
This full-time position involves travel mainly within France and occasionally abroad.
The position is offered as a permanent project contract with an estimated duration of about 4 years.
You will demonstrate the following skills and abilities:
- Solid knowledge of hydrology, hydrogeology, and their relationship with climate change and surface waters.
- Proficient in modeling hydrosystems, including groundwater flow, surface waters, and surface water balance calculation (SOFTWARE: MARTHE, MODFLOW, FEFLOW, etc.).
- Knowledge of climate scenario projections at different spatial scales for impact studies in hydrology is appreciated.
- Experience with parameter optimization and uncertainty management tools (PEST) is appreciated.
- Strong interpersonal skills, team-oriented, highly motivated, organized, and rigorous in executing tasks, delivering work, and adhering to contractual clauses.
Initiative and creativity.
- Good communication skills, both oral and written, for presenting scientific and technical results of projects (publications, articles, conference presentations).
