Context and contributions of the position

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.

BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

The position will be based at the BRGM in Pessac (near Bordeaux), attached to the R3C unit of the Risk Management Department (DRIS/R3C). No specific travel is required, except on a very occasional basis within the region and possibly outside the region for conferences and symposiums.

Job description

You will be mainly responsible for:
- Get familiar with the existing CoastSnap image processing chain and database.
- Propose and test new algorithms for analyzing the content of those images, with the aim of facilitating geomorphological monitoring.
- Adapt these algorithms to the sites being monitored and their specific characteristics (various geomorphological objects, projected shadows, variable brightness, etc.).
- Integrate the developed algorithms into the existing processing chain in order to boost its automation.
- Contribute to the improvement of alignment image algorithms. Methods for evaluating the quality of the alignment may be sought.
- Promotion: participate in the drafting of reports, articles, and presentations at scientific conferences.

The candidate will join a multidisciplinary research team working on the coastline. He/she will be responsible for testing and implementing new algorithms for processing images taken by citizens from fixed vantage points along the coastline. Interaction with the CATIE (Aquitaine Center for Information Technology and Electronics) is to be expected.

You will demonstrate the following skills and abilities:

- PhD in image processing or remote sensing applied to earth sciences.
- Strong skills in machine learning algorithms applied to image processing.
- Experience in image segmentation, ideally in an environmental context.
- Advanced programming skills in Python and/or Matlab is essential.
- Spirit of initiative and autonomy is expected.
