Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 25 bases in Mainland and Overseas France. BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
You will join the Deep Geophysics and Remote Sensing Unit (GTP), within the Subsurface Knowledge and Geomodelling Directorate (DCGS).
The GTP team develops innovative geophysical and satellite-based methods for imaging and monitoring natural hazards, energy resources, and mineral resources in the subsurface.
Within this framework, you will contribute to both research and operational projects involving electromagnetic geophysical methods, applied to a wide range of topics including volcanic hazards, mineral exploration, geothermal resources, CO₂ storage, and geological mapping.
Job description
As a Postdoctoral Researcher, your main responsibilities will include:
-Participating in field campaigns to design, implement, and manage Magnetotelluric (MT) surveys, including continuous monitoring systems;
-Processing, interpreting, and exploiting geophysical datasets and study results;
-Contributing actively to innovation in electromagnetic data acquisition, including the development of new sensors, source configurations, and optimized survey geometries;
-Advancing data processing methodologies, particularly through signal-to-noise ratio optimization based on geomagnetic activity indicators and space weather conditions;
-Contributing to innovation in numerical modelling and inversion approaches, including:
-3D numerical simulations;
-Finite Difference and Finite Element modelling;
-Deterministic and stochastic inversion techniques;
-Artificial Intelligence and advanced data-driven approaches.
