Context and contributions of the position
The Water, Environment, Process Development and Analysis Division seeks to provide solutions to societal issues concerning the environmental impacts of human activities on the geosphere (mainly on topics such as circular economy, waste recycling and natural resource management).
You will be joining the Waste, Raw Materials division team (DEPA/DMP).
The demand for metals and materials necessary for energy and digital transition is a major concern for our teams, who analyse the criticality and global markets for these metals. Current prospective analyses often rely on fragmented and outdated data, making the collection and monitoring of updated and relevant data crucial.
With the emergence and diversification of new technologies, material needs are evolving rapidly. Whether for hydrogen, fuel cells, Li-ion and sodium batteries, new photovoltaic technologies or rare-earth-free magnets.
Successfully anticipating these changes would strengthen the forward-looking analyses of material needs on which decisions can be made.
Job description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
The aim of this post-doctoral position is to develop systematic monitoring tools for technological trends, to identify major changes in material requirements for the hydrogen, electric mobility, renewable energies and digital sectors.
This includes a thorough review of scientific literature, grey literature and industrial patents. In-depth understanding of the issues in these sectors, the supply of metals, as well as skills in data mining and structured data management, are essential.
In addition to data collection for these PEPR projects, this post-doctoral study will also focus on life cycle inventories of these technologies.
As part of your duties, your main responsibilities will be as follows:
-Communicating the results of the project at consortium meetings and scientific conferences;
-Setting up semi-automated data collection monitoring tools;
-Conducting extensive literature reviews;
- Working with the BRGM internal project team and French partners on the PEPR programmes and more occasionally on other projects of the Waste, Raw Materials division. The work will consist of scientific/technical tasks of the project and also communication and promotion tasks (writing of project deliverables, organisation of workshops and contribution to the communication and development aspect of the project);
-Collaboration with other BRGM teams in charge of mineral monitoring and intelligence;
-Providing or updating datasets on open data portals.
-Analysing and evaluating prospective scenarios of critical metal recycling in France/Europe;
-Analysing the influence of the availability of resources in the raw materials market for the development of technologies (substitution effects, for example).
