Context and contributions of the position
The HYDROLINK project aims to bring together scientific communities from different specialties (coastal and estuarine oceanography, hydrogeology, hydrology, climatology) to design and implement innovative simulation methods (coupling artificial intelligence methods and distributed physics-based models) of water levels in the Seine basin, particularly in its downstream section, with a focus on the estuarine area.
The aim of the project is to produce numerical simulations, forecasts and projections of average and extreme water levels in the Seine basin over the short term (a few days) and the long term (several years). Within the framework of this project, extremes (severe low water and floods) will be studied in particular.
Job description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
The post-doctoral position focuses on building the training dataset and structuring the information. The aim here is to identify the parameters and variables that can influence water levels, particularly water-levels, and then feed them into the models. Some variables and parameters are already available and well-structured within national databases (e.g. BDLISA, ADES, Hydroportail), while others will potentially have to be created from existing datasets. These variables and parameters will be tested within the AI models as and when required. The development of data augmentation methods will also make it possible to derive information from existing datasets, possibly by merging them. For this, repeatable, documented processes are expected. This second aspect represents an innovative aspect in the field of groundwater.
The mission of the Water Division (DE) is to provide solutions to the challenges facing society in terms of water resource management and the environmental impact of human activities on the geosphere.
As part of your duties, you will be required to :
- Inventory, structure and document data useful to the project
- Harvest existing data sources, feed the project database, and make the dataset available
- Gather, explain and analyze the needs of modelers
- Propose, document and implement methods for processing the dataset to meet the data needs of modelers
- Data-augmentation: merge datasets, derive information from existing datasets (geostatistics, satellite image analysis, learning model, etc.).
Profile
Requested start date : 01/03/2025

You will demonstrate the following skills and abilities :
- Knowledge of hydrogeology
- Knowledge of machine learning and deep learning models
- Skills in data management and environmental data information systems
