Context and contributions of the position

Position available within the DRIS/RSV (Seismic and Volcanic Risks) unit, which, within the Risk Management Department (DRIS), is responsible for developing, maintaining and sharing knowledge of seismic and volcanic risks, as well as supporting public authorities and private actors in managing these risks. Position available as part of the European FASTER project. (Fast impact Assessment Systems and Tools for Earthquake Response).

Job description

As part of the FASTER project, the postdoctoral researcher (M/F) will primarily contribute to an in-depth analysis, conducted both at the multi-country level (France, Italy, Spain, Romania, Türkiye) and at the European Union level, of the technical and operational frameworks related to rapid response tools for earthquakes and their uses in crisis management context. This work will focus in particular on:
- A functional comparison of existing systems;
- An assessment of the needs of civil protection practitioners;
- A comparison of doctrines for the use of rapid response tools;
- The identification and analysis of feedback from actual activations during earthquakes.

Based on these analyses, he will also contribute to strengthening the robustness and functional scope of the BRGM's SEISAid tool, as well as developing recommendations for the European scientific community to guide the development of rapid response tools useful to societies exposed to seismic risk.

The postdoctoral researcher will also play an active role in establishing, leading and energizing the European “community of practice” dedicated to rapid response to earthquakes, and will support the project coordinator in his various tasks. He or she will also disseminate the results to the FASTER consortium and its team at BRGM, and promote the scientific value of the work carried out.

- Geomatics skills (GIS, spatial analysis);
- Good ability to communicate with different users from civil society (particularly in the civil protection sector) and to work in partnership with external actors;
- Fluency in English (reading and writing scientific documents, oral presentation), fluency in French would be an advantage;
- Knowledge of project management.
