Context and contributions of the position
The Energy and Decarbonization Directorate (DED) conducts scientific activities aimed at promoting the sustainable and secure development of decarbonized underground energy production and use, while helping to increase energy autonomy. It works notably on geothermal energy and heat storage, carbon capture and storage, natural hydrogen, underground storage of energy vectors, and radioactive waste storage. This position will contribute to the R&D missions, public policy support, and commercial activities in France and internationally of the DED/I2S unit. The unit's main themes concern: (i) assessing the integrity of natural and anthropogenic barriers (models, experimentation, and monitoring), (ii) determining the impacts of underground exploitation and uses (induced seismicity, pollutant migration, CO2 and associated impurity leaks...), (iii) assessing interferences between uses and potential use conflicts, monitoring underground structures (sensors, passive seismic...) and surface impacts (satellite interferometry...), (iv) predictive modeling of coupled phenomena (reactive transport, water-rock interaction...), (v) uncertainty treatment (Monte Carlo, meta-models), (vi) risk analysis.
Job description
Within the PEPR REINFORCE project, you will develop algorithms to integrate a mechanical and seismological calculation code into the Orison data assimilation platform developed at BRGM. You will test these developments to create and improve a (hydro)mechanical model of a deep geothermal site in Alsace and a statistical model of the Lacq site in the Pyrenees. You will use induced seismicity catalogs as input data for these models.
