Context and contributions of the position

Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.

BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.

The aim of the pH-D is to develop a suitable methodology for hydrological and hydrogeological modelling of hydrosystems using a global approach to meet the challenges of climate change and sustainable development.

Thesis work will focus on conceptualizing a working environment in the field of environmental sciences that is designed to be interoperable/FAIR ‘by design'.

To this end, the work will target the field of hydrogeological modelling (quantitative aspect in the first instance, qualitative aspect at a later stage), which has the advantage of concentrating numerous nodal points: data-consuming processes (quantities constrained by physical processes more often than not, information exchange formats very often varied and diverse), data-producing processes - tools very much used in hydrogeology.

Job description

The work will focus on :
- FAIR Water Data: concepts, state of the art, tools, practices. Link to the work caried out in the PEPR OneWater and Water4All.
- Modelling: inventory of current input and output interfaces (software: marthe, gardenia, gr4, pastas, flowpy, scikit-learn, torch, etc.).
- - Possible strategies for reconciling “day-to-day” practices (state of the art of what is currently implemented in models), with 100% FAIR practices

Implementation tests on case studies linked to VRE (Virtual Research Environment) approaches.

Profile

Requested start date : ASAP
Contract type : Thesis
Duration : 36 month
Education : BAC + 5
Experience : Beginner

Required skills and qualifications :
- Scientific curiosity, ability to listen, pragmatism, open-mindedness
- Knowledge of FAIR Data and OGC/ISO Observations, measurements & samples, OGC/WMO WaterML2, OGC/W3C SSN/SOSA, RDA I-ADOPT etc., as well as the semantization of business vocabulary (observed properties, measurement methods, units, etc.) or technical vocabulary: OGC CSW/WMS/WFS/WPS, OGC API Records/Maps/Features/Process, OGC SensorThings API, STAC, GeoDCAT
- Ability to conceptualize, develop and deploy tools and methods on a proof-of-concept scale
- Mastery of common programming languages
- Basic knowledge of environmental sciences - Ideally, knowledge of modelling (applied or not to hydrogeology, hydrogeology and the environment in general)
- Fluency in English
