Context and contributions of the position
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to:: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
Hydrogeophysical signals obtained from electrical methods are related to coupled ion transport processes, or so-called off-diagonal processes, occurring at the pore scale but being probed at a much larger scale using field geophysical measurements.
The classical way of interpreting such signals is based on inversion methods that relate the signal to one in situ parameter of interest. However, because of the complexity of natural systems, the inversion method does not ensure the uniqueness of the interpretation of the geophysical signal.
A forward modeling approach that takes into account the full complexity of the system would then be very useful to provide a sensitivity analysis of the interpretations.
In this PhD thesis project, the candidate will address this problem, using recent developments made at ISTO, BRGM (France), and LBNL (USA) to carry out forward modeling of electrical signals in hydrogeophysics using a reactive transport modeling approach.
Job description
We offer a highly motivating environment within the Energy & Environmental Geosciences team at ISTO and the Water Department at BRGM, and all the necessary equipment and lab space.
The city of Orleans is renowned in France and Europe for its quality of life and is close to Paris (about one hour by train).
The University of Orléans advocates gender equality.
Women are therefore strongly encouraged to apply.
Equally qualified severely handicapped applicants will be given preference.
The working language will be either French or English, depending on the doctoral fellow's preferred language.
We offer a three-year PhD fellowship at the Earth Sciences Institute of Orléans University (Center region close to Paris, France) in collaboration with the French Geological Survey (BRGM).
Supervision: Christophe Tournassat (ISTO) / Philippe Leroy (BRGM)
Profile
We welcome applicants with a Master's degree in engineering or natural sciences (Earth sciences, chemistry or physics).
Experience in numerical modeling is required. Good knowledge of fluid mechanics and transport processes, as well as some experience with the use of Matlab or Python, will be appreciated.
It is expected that the doctoral fellow closely cooperates with the aforementioned supervisors and possibly others, so the ability for interdisciplinary work and good organizational skills are required.
The doctoral fellow should also be fluent in English (oral and written).
Working conditions
The application should be addressed electronically to Prof. Christophe Tournassat (christophe.tournassat@univ-orleans.fr), Dr. Philippe Leroy (p.leroy@brgm.fr) and Dr. Marie-Christine Dictor (mc.dictor@brgm.fr). The application should include a CV and a short statement of motivation.
Within an environment that promotes a healthy work/life balance, particularly thanks to remote working, BRGM prides itself on providing a friendly and caring place to work.
Awarded HRS4R certification in 2021, we are committed to supporting you throughout your career at BRGM. We provide you with a range of tools for developing your skills and expertise, with scope for career progression and geographic mobility.
