Context and contributions of the position

This PhD project is part of the ANR PROBTOOL project, led by BRGM and carried out in collaboration with IPGP (Paris) and INRIA (Grenoble).
The position is based in Paris, with regular travel and the possibility of a research stay in Grenoble.

Job description

Within the project team, you will be responsible for:

Conducting a comprehensive literature review of the state of the art;
Defining and testing meta-modelling methodologies for each component of the study;
Building training datasets for the development of meta-models;
Validating the developed tools on selected study sites;
Ensuring the dissemination and proper management of the developed codes (e.g., via GitHub repositories);
Regularly presenting and discussing results with the supervisory team;
Writing and publishing at least two articles in international peer-reviewed journals;
Presenting the research outcomes at at least one international conference.

The PhD project is structured around three main objectives:

Adapting meta-modelling approaches applied to shallow-flow models, incorporating the initial position as an input variable. This methodology will first be tested on synthetic topographies;
Developing a meta-model for a case study on Réunion Island;
Using this meta-model to produce hazard maps, based on both statistical approaches (direct uncertainty propagation) and ensemble approaches (envelope scenarios).

Profile

You will be expected to demonstrate the following skills and qualities:

Strong programming skills (Python and/or R), as well as solid knowledge in numerical modelling and statistics;
Proficiency in English, both written and spoken;
Knowledge of hydraulic modelling, risk science, or meta-modelling would be considered an asset.
