Context and contributions of the position
The Water, Environment, Process Development and Analysis Division seeks to provide solutions to societal issues concerning the environmental impacts of human activities on the geosphere (mainly on topics such as circular economy, waste recycling and natural resource management).
You will be joining the Waste, Raw Materials (DEPA/DMP) division team and contribute to the scientific and technical production in the field of processing/recovery of primary and secondary mineral resources (industrial waste, urban mine resources, by-products).
The position will contribute to European and national research projects on assessing the environmental impact of the supply of raw materials for electric mobility.
The position also provides ad hoc support to other unit projects.
Job description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
As part of your duties, your main responsibilities will be as follows :
- Assess the environmental impact of the primary and secondary (recycling) production of the metals used in batteries;
- Compare the environmental impacts of different Li-ion battery recycling scenarios;
- Integrate recycling quality issues into the environmental assessment;
- Contribute to the development of resource efficiency and criticality indicators for Li-ion battery raw materials;
- Work on communicating and promoting the results (writing deliverables and scientific articles, taking part in conferences).

You have following skills and abilities:
- Skills in Life Cycle Analysis (LCA),
- Knowledge of the key issues relating to electric mobility,
- Knowledge of programming languages R and Python would be an advantage,
- Work in a precise manner and ensure compliance with the deadlines and ability to present scientific outputs,
- Ability to be work independently in the organisation of daily work and also as part of a multidisciplinary team,
- Communication skill, good interpersonal skills,
- Fluency in English (read, written and spoken),
- Proficiency in French (written and spoken) would be an advantage.
Working conditions
You have a PhD in environmental assessment or industrial ecology (obtained within the last 3 years). An understanding of the issues associated with the use of natural resources as part of the energy transition and electric mobility will be an additional asset.
