Job title
Postdoctoral Position: Sedimentary Basin Geologist
Contract
Post-doctoral contrat
Contractual hours
Full-time
Contract duration
18 month
Context and contributions of the position
You hold a PhD in Earth Sciences, with a specialization in sedimentary basin geology, geophysics, or related disciplines. You have a strong interest in the study of complex sedimentary basins, particularly in rift settings, tectonic inversion contexts, and polyphase structural evolution.
You are proficient in the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), as well as seismic interpretation and well data analysis software, and 3D geomodelling tools. You have demonstrated ability to integrate heterogeneous datasets (seismic, well, and geological data) and to produce consistent regional-scale 3D geological models.
Autonomous and rigorous, you are motivated to apply your skills within a structured research program such as the PEPR “Sous-sol, bien commun,” as part of the AquiBEAT project. You will join the Basement Orogen and Sedimentary Basin Geology (GSB) unit within the Subsurface Knowledge and Geomodelling Division.
Job description
Joining the Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) means becoming part of the leading public establishment in the Earth sciences, bringing together 1,000 expert and enthusiastic people in 29 entities located in mainland France and overseas. The aim of BRGM's work is to provide geological knowledge and an understanding of phenomena linked to the soil and subsoil, with one overriding objective: to meet the challenges of environmental change through innovative projects that have a major impact on society.
As part of your role, your main responsibilities will include:
-Producing a synthesis of subsurface knowledge across the Aquitaine domain;
-Conducting basin analysis integrating both surface and subsurface data;
-Developing a 3D geometric model and contributing your expertise to the understanding of geodynamic processes;
-Contributing to the scientific and public outreach of BRGM and the PEPR “Sous-sol” program by promoting your research through publications and conference presentations.
Profile
Starting date : 01/07/2026
Type of contract : Postdoctoral Researcher
Education : PhD
Duration : 18 month
Skills in sedimentary basin geology and seismic interpretation:
-Ability to analyze sedimentary basins at different spatial and temporal scales;
-Ability to interpret 2D and 3D seismic data (horizon picking, fault interpretation, inherited and reactivated structures, sedimentary geometries);
-Production of structural maps, thickness maps, isohypses, paleogeographic maps, and interpreted cross-sections;
-Integration of seismic, well (stratigraphy, trajectories, logs), and geological data into a consistent framework.
3D geological modelling:
-Strong expertise in 3D geological modelling at both regional and basin scales, including the integration of stratigraphic horizons and fault networks;
-Ability to build and update a consistent 3D geological model of the Aquitaine Basin using heterogeneous datasets;
-Proficiency in geological modelling and interpretation software.
Communication and collaboration:
-Ability to communicate geological analysis results effectively, both in writing and orally;
-Ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams (geologists, geophysicists, sedimentologists, hydrogeologists, reservoir engineers, modellers);
-Participation in project meetings, internal presentations, workshops, and conferences to share scientific and technical progress.
Scientific monitoring and dissemination:
-Maintaining awareness of advances in sedimentary basin geology, seismic interpretation, and 3D modelling, particularly within the PEPR “Sous-sol, bien commun” framework;
-Participation in national and international conferences and contribution to at least one scientific publication.
