Context and contributions of the position
You will work within the Subsurface Knowledge and Geomodelling Directorate (DCGS), in the Geomodelling and Data Science Unit (GGDS).The Geomodelling and Data Science Unit's mission is to provide BRGM's thematic experts with methodological tools to generate knowledge from data. The unit develops methods and digital tools to build predictive models, simulators, or knowledge graphs. It relies on high-performance numerical methods, machine learning (AI), and geostatistics. In particular, the unit develops the geomodelling tools required for the construction of France's 3D/4D geological model. As such, you will contribute to the processing, modelling, and interpretation of geological data within the framework of multidisciplinary studies. More generally, you will be responsible for developing research and expertise activities aimed at advancing and integrating geostatistics applied to various fields such as mineral resources, reservoir potential assessment, or geothermal energy.
Job description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France. BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
Your main responsabilities and duties will be to :
• Conducting geostatistical studies and developing 3D geological models on applied geology topics such as quality control and enhancement of public data managed by BRGM, thematic mapping, geothermal energy, sedimentary basin syntheses, mining and post-mining;
• Participating in multidisciplinary studies by contributing the Geology–Geostatistics component and uncertainty quantification to other areas such as groundwater, natural and anthropogenic hazards, energy and decarbonization, mineral resources;
• Developing innovative methodologies for geological modelling and for processing geological data in a broad sense and contributing to their dissemination.

You will mobilize the following skills:
• Data analysis and processing using geostatistical methods. Knowledge of machine learning methods would be an asset;
• Techniques and tools for 3D geological modelling;
• Knowledge of geology;
• Familiarity with geophysics is appreciated;
• Ability to communicate and collaborate with various BRGM disciplines;
• Ability to communicate in French and/or English (spoken and written).
Working conditions
This full-time position involves occasional travel within France and abroad.
