Context and contributions of the position
The Seismic and Volcanic Risks unit (RSV), within the Risks and Prevention Division (DRP), has a vacancy for a permanent position as researcher/engineer in seismic hazard.
Our unit is in charge of developing, maintaining and sharing seismic and volcanic risks knowledge and it supports public authorities and private companies in managing those risks.
Our field of action covers a very broad spectrum of scientific and technical topics, from seismic sources to risk analysis, including assessment of soil response and the physical or functional vulnerability of structures.
The unit is looking to strengthen its production capabilities in the field of seismic hazard, with a particular focus on engineering seismology.
Job description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to : meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
You will contribute to seismic hazard studies for risk prevention and crisis management across a wide range of projects.
You will be involved in the entire workflow, from data collection and processing, analysis and interpretation to the development of final products and reporting, including scientific publications.
You will also be in charge of preparing scientific and technical offers, raising funds, managing collaborative projects with a wide range of applications and fund providers (national or European research programs, national or international public authorities, private companies).
We are looking for a versatile and flexible collaborator, who can contribute across the Risks and Prevention Direction and collaborate effectively with other BRGM divisions and multidisciplinary project partners.
Tasks :
- Data collection, processing, analysis and interpretation for seismic hazard assessment studies;
- Presentation and publication of results, including public reports and scientific publications;
- Project management of research projects or technical studies for national or international public authorities;
- Preparing responses to calls for projects, funding offers or technical bids;
- Monitor scientific and technical state of the art and make proposals to diversify the unit's expertise and funding;
Participation to internal or external working groups dedicated to seismic hazard.
Profile
You must have :
- Relevant experience in Earth Sciences and engineering seismology;
- Relevant experience in seismic hazard assessment (Ground Motion Models, DSHA, PSHA);
- Experience in GIS (QGIS);
- Adequate communication skills, with the capacity to work effectively in collaboration with different users and professions (geologists, risks engineers, data scientist, crisis managers, etc…) and with external partners;
- Articulate oral and written communication skills, and proficiency in French an English (reading and writing scientific documents, oral presentations). Knowledge of another language would be a plus;
- Experience in project management.
It is an advantage if you also have:
- Experience in national and international seismic building codes (ICOLD, EC8, RFS, etc…);
- Experience in site effects assessment;
- Knowledge of the European scientific community in the field of seismic hazard or natural risks;
Customer relations skills, taste for innovation, co-construction of innovative solutions and transfer of research results to operational applications.
Working conditions
Occasional short-term travel in France, French overseas departments and abroad. Full-time position.
You have an MSc with 5 to 10 years' experience, or a PhD, and ideally have completed a post-doctoral position abroad.
