Description de la mission

As France's national geological survey, the BRGM (Bureau de recherches géologiques et minières) is the country's leading public body when it comes to earth science, responsible for managing resources and risks relating to the earth and the subsurface (www.brgm.eu). The work carried out by the BRGM is geared towards scientific research, supporting public policies and international cooperation.

You will therefore be primarily responsible for:
- Contributing to a scientific state of the art in the textual analysis of tweets and social media analysis
- Contributing to the development of methodologies and algorithms for tweets geolocalization: (Natural language processing methods, analysis of the relational network of tweets and consideration of phenomena)
o Recognition, extraction and contextualization of location information that can be found in tweets messages (named spatial entities and spatial relationships);
o Enrichment of the analysis of these geographical mentions contained in the tweets by a contextual consideration of other available knowledge (credibility of the Twitter user, analysis of its history, but also phenomenology of natural hazards, alert notifications, sensor data, etc.).
- Implementing these methodologies
- Contributing to technical reports and presentations
- Writing articles in international journals and attending to conferences

Contexte

BRGM has been working for several years to develop a participatory platform for semi-automatic analysis of messages related to natural disasters on the social network Twitter. Known as SURICATE-Nat (www.suricatenat.fr), this platform aims to exploit the testimonies immediately after a natural disaster in order to promote a rapid rise of information by «citizen sensors».

As part of the development of the SURICATE-Nat platform, BRGM and IGN (UMR LaSTIG) will work together to improve the automatic geolocalization of tweets, which is a necessary step to accurately describe the effects of natural disasters. This work will contribute directly to the implementation of a tooled approach to demonstrate the value and feasibility of automated exploitation of data from social networks in the context of natural disasters.

Profil

PhD in computer science, computational linguistics or geographic information science with knowledge in Natural Language Processing
With less than five years of postdoctoral experience
You need to have academic publications in related works

You will employ the following skills:
•Text mining/NLP techniques
•Very good programming skills (Python, R, PostgreSQL, NLTK)
•Knowledge on GIS (QGIS, PostGIS and spatial SQL)
•The ability to understand questions regarding research and transfer
•The ability to understand both multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary fields
•Spoken and Written French, Written English
•Knowledge of natural hazards issues would be appreciated

This research work being carried out in partnership with IGN, this full-time position involves frequent travel to Paris
