Context and contributions of the position
As part of the Underground Research Program (PEPR), co-led by BRGM and CNRS, BRGM is looking for a person to participate in the implementation of the target project "Digital Earth Platform".
This Underground program aims to structure the community of researchers in Earth and environmental sciences, in social, environmental, economic and legal sciences and the community of citizens, decision-makers and industrialists around the issues concerning the definition of the conditions for responsible and sustainable use of the subsoil and the establishment of a framework aimed at limiting conflicts and impacts. More specifically, you will intervene in the work package 3.3.2 that aims to construct a prediction map of the subsurface based on multisource regional geophysical data (airborne Magnetism, airborne Gamma spectrometry, airborne electromagnetism, Gravimetry) using semi/ unsupervised Machine Learning algorithms.
Job description
Joining the French Geological Survey (BRGM) means becoming part of France's leading public institution for Earth Science applications bringing together 1,000 wholeheartedly committed experts across 29 bases in Mainland and Overseas France.
BRGM focuses on enhancing geological knowledge and understanding of surface and sub-surface-related phenomena, with a view to: meeting the challenges of environmental changes through innovative projects with societal implications.
As a postdoctoral researcher, you will focus on key research axes at the intersection of AI, data science, and geophysics:
- Uncertainty Modeling: Developing models that quantify and express confidence in predictions from multisource geophysical data.
- Multiscale Data Fusion: Integrating geophysical data across various resolutions and sources, including remote sensing, into unified predictive models.
- Confidence -Based AI Models: Designing advanced semi- supervised and unsupervised learning algorithms that incorporate uncertainty and confidence indicators.
- Explainable AI: Implementing XAI techniques to ensure model interpretability and trustworthiness for geoscientists. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team will be key, as you lead research efforts, publish findings, and contribute to advancing AI- driven subsurface mapping methodologies.
Also, you will be in charge of the transmission and promotion of the results to the general public and through a top-tier scientific journal.
Profile
Contract type : Post-Doctorate
Education : Doctorant
Experience : Beginner
You have a doctorate in data science and a strong foundation in AI and machine learning and you are eager to apply thesis capabilities to innovative geophysical and subsurface mapping research.
Ideally you should have:
- Expertise in machine learning, particularly in unsupervised and semi- supervised learning.
- Strong proficiency in programming and relevant tools (eg, Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch), along with experience in data manipulation and processing.
- Experience or interest in uncertainty quantification and confidence modeling. - Skills in Remote Sensing and image/signal processing, especially applied to large, multisource datasets.
- Knowledge of data fusion techniques for integrating information from different scales and sources.
- Experience or interest in explainable AI (XAI) to enhance model transparency and interpretability.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment, learning from geophysics and geology experts.
- Experience in managing georeferenced data through GIS software (e.g. QGIS) and interest in geosciences would be a plus.
This position offers the chance to expand your expertise in AI while working on cutting-edge applications involving complex geophysical datasets and real-world problems-solving.
